Project Title: Gesture effects on comprehension as a function of language proficiency [RI 6/21 AY]

Project Introduction:
This research study aims to find out whether listeners comprehend a message differently depending on whether the speaker gestures and whether this effect varies due to the listener’s language proficiency. A third aim of this study is to compare gesture comprehension in English(L1)-Mandarin(L2) bilinguals and Mandarin(L1)-English(L2) bilinguals. This study will involve data collection from an international sample of bilinguals and from local participants. The research will allow us to compare multimodal communication differences between local bilinguals and international English-Mandarin bilinguals. This position is part-time (21 hours a week), with renumeration and benefits adjusted accordingly.

**Requirements**:

- A degree related to psychology, with prior experience in quantitative psychological research methods
- Interest in bilingualism, psycholinguistics and communication
- Preferably prior experience with Qualtrics and/or MTurk
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Good attention to detail
- Strong planning and organizational skills
- Able to work independently and in a team
- Able to learn fast, multi-task and work within tight schedules
- Proficiency in spoken and written English, with at least passing proficiency in Mandarin

**Responsibilities**:

- Recruitment of actor/s, recording and video processing of stimuli
- Mounting of study on Qualtrics and MTurk platforms
- Assist in data entry and processing
- Contribute to the dissemination of research findings including conducting literature reviews, preparing academic publications and research reports.
- Assist with any other research duties as and when assigned
- Perform other assignments as determined by the Principal Investigator
