Chemical Engineer

**Who are we?**

We are the University of Cambridge’s presence in Singapore called Cambridge CARES, sponsored by
the National Research Foundation (NRF) of Singapore as part of its CREATE program CAM.CREATE. The
research programme, the Cambridge Centre for Carbon Reduction in Chemical Technology (C4T), is a
collaborative research activity between the University of Cambridge, Nanyang Technological
University (NTU), and the National University of Singapore (NUS) within Cambridge CARES.

C4T answers the question of how to positively contribute to Singapore’s ratification of the Paris
Agreement on climate change while ensuring the country’s progress and prowess in economic,
technological, environmental and social dimensions. The research programme systematically
investigates the raw materials, processes and products of the local chemical industry and investigates
technologies to lower the carbon footprint of this major pillar of Singapore’s economy.

As part of C4T, the World Avatar project aims to exploit synergies for resource, energy, and emissions
savings for industrial operations by designing and optimising industrial processes. This will also involve
evaluating environmental impacts over the life cycle of a product i.e. life cycle assessment (LCA) and
identifying or developing sustainable solutions for the product.

**Who are we looking for?**

The ideal applicant will develop mass & energy balances, process flowsheet models and process
simulations to study and optimise the various industrial operations, particularly for Singapore. This
will also involve conducting life cycle assessment and developing sustainable solutions for the
industrial operations.

Publish research results in high-quality international peer-reviewed journals.

Develop mass & energy balances, process flowsheet models and process simulations to
study and optimise the various industrial operations, particularly for Singapore.

Conduct life cycle assessment for the chemical industry, particularly for Singapore.

Identify and/or develop sustainable solutions for the chemical industry, particularly for
Singapore.

Make strategic decisions on complicated and ambiguous technical problems.

Maintain close interaction with collaborators. Activities will include participating in research
discussions with local industries and partners, overseas universities, and writing reports as
required by the National Research Foundation (NRF) of Singapore.

**What skills do you have?
A degree in a relevant discipline, such as chemical or process engineering or a related

At least 3 years of industry experience in oil and gas or petrochemical sectors.

Extensive experience with one or more process modelling software such as Aspen Plus,
gPROMS, Aspen HYSYS.

Experience with one or more life cycle tools such as GaBi, SimaPro.

Proactive problem solver with critical thinking and attention to detail.

Excellent oral and written communication skills. Able to communicate complex technical
concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

The ability to work as part of a dynamic, multidisciplinary team of researchers.

Experience with one or more general-purpose programming languages such as Java, Python,
JavaScript, C/C++, Fortran as well as version-control tools such as git (preferable). Training
will be provided for those without programming background.
