An AB worker reports to the Chief Engineer, oversees by Tugboat Vessel-in-Charge and performs general maintenances, repair, sanitation and upkeep of the material and equipment in the deck department as well as standing watch to ensure the ship maintains a steady course.

**Responsibilities**
- Work on board the vessel.
- Stand watch as helmsman on board the vessel for obstructions in path of vessel.
- Maintains visual communication with other ships using visual signalling devices such as blinker lights and semaphore.
- Maintain a steady vessel course, properly execute all rudder orders and communicate using navigation terms relating to heading and steering.
- Perform general maintenance, repair, sanitation and upkeep of material, equipment, and areas of in the deck department.
- Maintain ship’s metal structures by chipping, scraping cleaning, priming and painting.
- Clean, maintain, and repair the hull, decks, superstructure, cargo gear and smoke stack.
- To maintain the lifeboats and life rafts in good working condition.
- Lowers or raises lifeboats with winch or falls.
- Use visual signalling devices such as blinker lights and semaphore.

**Requirements**:

- Able Seaman Certificate
