**Role Overview**
As a Senior Applied Science Manager, you will be responsible for delivering and executing on our science roadmap and vision. You will lead a team of scientists to translate business and functional requirements into concrete deliverables. You will provide thought leadership to scientists and engineers to invent and implement scalable ML recommendations and data driven algorithms supporting flexible UI frameworks. You will develop and lead a science center of excellence, developing solutions that can also be leveraged by organizations across Coupang Play, representing Coupang Play at internal and external science conferences, and working closely with peers in eCommerce and Eats to advance science at Coupang. Finally, as we're scaling rapidly, you'll have lots of opportunities to build and grow the team via hiring and mentoring.
To accomplish this, you are expected to have an established background in building high-performing teams developing machine learning models and delivering cross-functional initiatives. You should be somebody who enjoys recruiting and coaching, is customer-centric, and feels strongly about delivering results.

**Basic Qualifications**
- PhD degree with 4+ years of applied research experience or a Master's degree and 6+ years of experience of applied research experience
- Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or related language
- 3+ years of experience directly managing scientists and/or machine learning engineers
- 1+ years of experience managing science and/or engineering teams
- Advanced degree (e.g., M.S. or PhD) in computer science, statistics, engineering, mathematics or relevant discipline
- Demonstrated use of modeling and optimization techniques tailored to meet business needs
- Experience with leadership of experienced scientists as well as a record of developing junior members from academia/industry to a career track in a business environment
- A strong track record of project delivery, that demonstrates customer impact through research and science
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
**Preferred Qualifications**
- PhD degree in Computer Science or related field
- Experience working on recommender systems within e-commerce, advertising, video or other digital media fields
- A track record of peer-reviewed scientific publications and contributions that have advanced the field
- Experience in deep learning, causal learning, or bandit learning
- 2+ years of hands-on experience as a senior-level scientist
- A love of digital entertainment
