A public area cleaner is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in public spaces like lobbies, hallways, and restrooms . Key duties include sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and polishing, as well as emptying trash, restocking supplies, and reporting maintenance issues. The role ensures a welcoming environment for guests and staff while following health and safety protocols.

Key responsibilities:

  • General cleaning: Sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and polishing floors; dusting and polishing furniture, fixtures, and surfaces.
  • Restroom maintenance: Cleaning and sanitizing public restrooms, and regularly restocking supplies like soap, paper towels, and toilet paper.
  • Waste removal: Emptying trash bins and replacing liners in all public areas.
  • Surface cleaning: Wiping down glass doors, mirrors, walls, and other surfaces.
  • Equipment upkeep: Maintaining and cleaning cleaning equipment, and ensuring cleaning supplies are properly stored.
  • Reporting: Immediately reporting any maintenance issues, damages, or safety concerns to a supervisor.
  • Guest interaction: Assisting guests when required and maintaining a professional and friendly attitude.
  • Special tasks: Assisting with special cleaning projects or events, such as carpet shampooing or cleaning banquet halls.

Qualifications and skills

  • Experience: Previous experience in a cleaning or housekeeping role is often preferred but not always required.
  • Attitude: Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, a willingness to learn, and a good attitude are important.
  • Physical requirements: Must be able to perform physical tasks, including lifting and operating cleaning equipment.
  • Knowledge: Basic knowledge of cleaning chemicals and safety protocols.
  • Other: A high school diploma or equivalent may be preferred.
