A Bricklayer is responsible for building and repairing walls, partitions, arches, and other structures using bricks, concrete blocks, and other masonry materials. The role involves interpreting drawings, preparing mortar, and laying bricks accurately to ensure strength, durability, and quality workmanship in accordance with project specifications and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Read and interpret construction drawings and blueprints to determine layout and dimensions.
Measure and mark guidelines for laying bricks, blocks, or stones.
Mix mortar or concrete and apply it evenly to joints and surfaces.
Lay bricks, blocks, or tiles in horizontal layers with proper alignment and spacing.
Cut and shape bricks or blocks using hand tools or power tools to fit corners, arches, or openings.
Construct and repair walls, partitions, foundations, and other structures.
Apply damp-proof materials or waterproofing compounds where necessary.
Install lintels, reinforcement, or insulation within masonry structures.
Fill joints, remove excess mortar, and clean finished brickwork for a neat appearance.
Follow all safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work area.
Collaborate with site supervisors, engineers, and other trade workers.
Requirements:
Minimum Education: Primary or Secondary education.
Preferred Certification (Singapore):
BCA CoreTrade – Bricklaying / Masonry Work or Certificate of Trade Test (CTT).
Apply Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) in Construction Sites (CSOC).
Experience: Minimum 2–3 years of experience in masonry or construction fieldwork.
Knowledge: Understanding of different brick types, mortar mixes, and structural alignment.
Skills:
Proficient in bricklaying, blockwork, and plastering techniques.
Knowledge of structural alignment and leveling tools (spirit level, plumb line, laser level).
Ability to read and follow technical drawings and layout plans.
Understanding of mortar composition, curing, and bonding methods.
Skill in cutting and shaping bricks or blocks using hand tools or saws.
Knowledge of reinforced brickwork and cavity wall construction.
Understanding of thermal and damp-proofing principles.
Attention to accuracy, symmetry, and finishing detail.
Good teamwork and communication with other site workers.
Awareness of construction safety standards and PPE usage.
Physical strength and stamina for heavy manual work.
Time management to complete tasks within project deadlines.
Problem-solving ability for uneven surfaces or design adjustments.
Quality inspection skills to ensure durability and finish of work.
