[What the role is]

The Singapore Botanic Gardens (SBG) is a leading tropical botanical institute and a premier green space. It houses an extensive collection of tropical plants, including both in situ and ex situ collections of trees, orchids, palms, cycads, and gingers, which are displayed in taxonomic collections, themed gardens, and natural and recreated habitats.

[What you will be working on]

As part of the Living Collections team, you will be responsible for maintaining, developing, and educating the public about the plant collections and landscapes within the Gardens. Your multifaceted role will involve:

- Managing horticultural operations

- Curating botanical collections and designing beautiful landscapes

- Conservation work such as conserving and propagating rare plant species, supporting botanical and ecological research (e.g. monitoring plant phenology), and undertaking landscaping and habitat restoration

- Educational outreach such as developing interpretive materials for the public and sharing knowledge about plant collections through publications and conducting tours

- General operations such as contract management, record keeping, ensuring site cleanliness, and managing wildlife

- Collaborating with other operational teams (e.g., facilities management, visitor services) to ensure the smooth running of the Gardens

Additionally, you will contribute to various programmes and activities typical of a public garden, such as planning and preparing for events including themed displays and horticultural shows.

[What we are looking for]

- Area of study in horticulture, botany, or a related field

- Motivated and proactive, with initiative in following up on site management and assigned tasks

- Team player with strong communication, organisational, and supervisory skills

- Hands-on individual who enjoys outdoor work and has a passion for plants

- Interest in or willingness to develop skills in tropical horticulture and botany

- Experience in developing and maintaining plant collections, preferably in a public park or garden and in themed gardens, is preferred

- Experience with and/or interest in cultivating a wide range of woody and herbaceous plants is advantageous

- Good understanding of tropical tree management is beneficial

- Certification as a Practising Horticulturist (accredited by the Australian Institute of Horticulture) and/or Certified Arborist (accredited by the International Society of Arboriculture) is advantageous
