The KK Genetic Service is seeking a Genetic Counsellor to complement doctors in delivering care to patients who have a personal or family history of birth defects or genetic disorders. The role involves providing information and support to patients and their families, as well as coordinating research projects carried out in the centre.
Job Scope:
- Conduct patient intake, construct complete pedigrees, obtain appropriate medical histories, and organise and present pertinent medical and genetic information to the healthcare team.
- Apply knowledge of genetics and genetic disorders to effectively communicate genetic, medical and technical information to patients.
- Identify family dynamics and assess patients' emotional responses.
- Help patients understand both the medical aspects of genetic conditions and their psychological and familial implications.
- Provide information about available options, including genetic testing, disease management and prevention, while facilitating patient decision-making in a non-directive manner.
- Connect patients with support resources and research opportunities within the medical community.
Coordinate genetic testing for patients and families, including:
Liaising with genetic laboratories
- Arranging tests
- Following up on results
- Discussing results with patients
Job Requirements:
- Master's Degree in Genetic Counselling or equivalent
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience in counselling
- Proficiency in IT applications
