The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Assistant on an 18-month contract at the Natural Sciences and Science Education Department.

Project Title: Developing Large Language Models to Generate Authentic Student Personas and Realistic Classroom Exchanges for Microteaching

Project Introduction: The Natural Sciences and Science Education Department of NIE is hiring one Research Assistant (full-time) to support an MOE-contracted study that seeks to develop large language models (LLMs) to generate authentic student personas

and realistic classroom exchanges for microteaching purposes.

This project seeks to:

1) Gather requisite domain knowledge for the development of specialised LLMs for microteaching.

2) Conduct preliminary evaluation of their cost effectiveness and functional performance for microteaching.

The period of the contract will be 18 months, and the Research Assistant is expected to participate in all activities related to science education and research led by the Principal Investigator.

Requirements:

Essential

  • Bachelor's degree in sciences, engineering or social sciences
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English language
  • Good analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Good organizational skills, shows initiative to plan and anticipate work needed to be done
  • Good communication skills, including the ability liaise with external parties
  • Shows positive work attitude and strong work ethics
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision within deadlines

Preferred

  • Has previous working experience as Research Assistant in education projects
  • Has published in reputable academic/scholarly journals
  • Background in technology and ability to code in Python
  • Able to write academic papers

Responsibilities:

  • Liaison with school and MOE partners
  • Organisation of meetings
  • Coordinating with other team members
  • Conduct literature reviews
  • Assist in development of large language models
  • Support participant screening, recruitment, and scheduling
  • Data collection and analysis
  • Transcribe qualitative data
  • Organise and manage research materials, equipment, documentation and ethical records
  • Support logistics and contribute to reporting, presentations, and dissemination activities
  • Publication and report writing
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator
