Key Responsibilities
- This role involves assisting in vessel operations, navigation, maintenance, and supporting scientific teams in conducting environmental study and data collection.
- Operate and assist in navigating the survey boat in compliance with maritime regulations and safety protocols.
- Support environmental survey teams in collecting environmental data, samples as well as deploying and retrieving research equipment.
- Conduct routine maintenance checks on the vessel, ensuring all safety and operational equipment is in good working order.
- Assist with logistic planning, including fuel management and site assessments.
- Ensure adherence to environmental and marine conservation guidelines during operations.
- Record and maintain logs of vessel operations, weather conditions, and any incidents.
- Communicate effectively with the survey team and shore-based personnel.
- Assist in emergency procedures and respond effectively to unexpected situations on the water.
Qualifications and basic skills
- Valid boating license or skipper certification (e.g. Steersman/helmsman license)
- Experience operating small to mid-sized vessels, preferably in a survey, research, or marine environment
- Knowledge of maritime safety regulations, navigation techniques, and emergency response protocols.
- Basic mechanical knowledge for minor vessel maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Experience working in environmental research, marine biology, or oceanography (preferred but not required).
- Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Physical fitness and the ability to work in challenging marine conditions.
- Proficient swimming skills for field surveys around water environments.
Desirable Skills
- Familiarity with hydrographic or environmental survey equipment.
- First Aid and Sea Survival Certification.
- Experience working with marine survey companies
