The Singapore Botanic Gardens (SBG) is one of the oldest tropical botanic gardens and one of only three botanic gardens in the world inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has an extensive living and herbarium collection, including large living collections of orchids, palms, dipterocarps, cycads, gingers and plants of human cultural significance, along with extensive herbarium collections from Singapore and other parts of Southeast Asia. SBG is a Division of the National Parks Board which is responsible for Singapore’s network of Parks and Nature Reserves.
This position will involve developing a research programme on plant ecology in Singapore and the wider Southeast Asian region, with a particular focus on contributing to the development of evidence-based conservation strategies. You will be expected to work closely with other researchers in Singapore Botanic Gardens and other Divisions of the National Parks Board.
**Responsibilities**
- Develop and undertake a research programme on plant ecology focusing on biogeochemical and biophysical studies of the natural and urban forests in Singapore and the wider Southeast Asian region. Focal areas of research include carbon, nutrient, water and energy fluxes in these environments.
- Document and publish the results from research as both scholarly and semi-popular accounts that would bring credit to the Singapore Botanic Gardens and the National Parks Board.
- Network and form collaborations within Singapore and the region that would enhance the botanical research and development capabilities of the Singapore Botanic Gardens.
- Assist in capacity building in botany and ecology in Singapore and the wider region.
**Requirements**:
- PhD in Plant Sciences / Ecology/ Physical Geography with a specialisation in biogeochemistry, plant ecophysiology, or related research fields.
- At least five years of post-PhD research experience.
- Fieldwork experience, especially in the Southeast Asian region.
- Experience in writing scientific papers and reviews, popular articles, and grant proposals.
- Ability to develop a wide personal network and engage collaborators from the Southeast Asian region.
- Independent, with a positive attitude and a good team player.
