
Engineering Psychologist

**Duties**:
Serves as a team member supporting complex and challenging projects/programs and other activities under the direction of a manager, project manager/team leader, or more experienced engineer or Human Factors Specialist.
Incumbent applies knowledge and experience of science of psychology and human factors concepts, as a Human Factors Specialist within the Aircraft Certification Service, Flight Test & Human Factors Branch. Assignments require the ability to work on a multi-discipline team and coordination across functional and organizational lines. Typical assignments may include:
Supports human factors evaluation and flight testing related to certification programs, development programs, designee programs, and continued operational safety. This includes supporting the human factors aspects of planning, reviewing, and executing ground and flight test evaluations during aircraft certification programs. Analyzes and evaluates technical data submitted by applicants to show compliance for the human factors design requirements and flight testing of aircraft, aircraft systems, propulsion, and flight crew interfaces.
Participates in the evaluation, standardization, and approval of flight display symbology, color philosophy, flight deck design, and pilot vehicle interfaces for type certification programs while balancing standardization with existing certification practices, projects schedules, pilot training, and operational issues. Works with appropriate Standards Staff personnel, Aircraft Certification Branch Engineers, Flight Test Pilots, and Aircraft Evaluation Division (AED) personnel to evaluate HF requirements for flight decks and associated equipment and displays. This may include participating in team evaluations of new and novel controls, displays, and technologies when necessary.
When requested, participates in strategic initiatives to standardize HF policy procedures and processes within the FAA. Models behaviors of accountability, collaboration, professionalism and technical competence in all assigned duties.
Established policies/procedures provide guidance for most assignments but allow considerable discretion to select the most appropriate approach or to recommend new approaches. Resolves routine technical issues independently but seeks guidance of more experienced HF specialists and engineers or manager for unique issues. Individual work is routinely supervised/reviewed to ensure compliance and alignment with the requirements of a specific project and priority of other work activities.
**Additional Duties and Responsibilities for the I-Band only**:
Work assignments support certification projects through the FAA Military Certification Office (MCO), most of which require a security clearance at the secret level.

**Qualifications**:
**Specialized Experience for H-Band**: All applicants must demonstrate one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the FV-G or FG/GS-5/7/9 level. Specialized experience is experience which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position and that is typically in or directly related to work of the position to be filled. **SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE includes**:
- Experience in planning and conducting human factors evaluations or research, analyzing data collected using statistical techniques or modeling, and communicating scientific information.
**Specialized Experience for I-Band**: All applicants must demonstrate one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the FV-H or FG/GS-11/12 level. Specialized experience is experience which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position and that is typically in or directly related to work of the position to be filled. **SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE includes**:
- Experience in planning and conducting human factors evaluations or research, analyzing data collected using statistical techniques or modeling, participating on a research team, and communicating scientific information.
