**ROLES**: He shall have:

- General knowledge on earthworks and surveying
- Principal components, power and transmission systems of an excavator
- Daily inspection and weekly maintenance of the excavator
- Pre-start and shut-down procedures
- Trenching, ditching and slope cutting techniques
- How to maintain stability in operation
- Good practices for backfilling, travelling and loading excavated materials onto vehicle
- Safety requirements
- Interpret drawings, calculate earth quantities, levels, slopes and width of excavations.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**

a. Check his Excavator and carry out operational tests on all limit switches under no load condition daily before use using the relevant checklist;
b. Inform the mechanic when it is due for preventive maintenance;
c. Not attempt to repair, alter or modify the Excavator;
d. Not leave the excavator unattended at all times and if there is a need to do so, removed all keys and access to the operation controls

e. Not use the excavator for any operation of which it is not intended for, such as to pull or drag the load;
f. Not maneuver unless he has received a clear signal from a signalman;
g. Check the ground condition on which an excavator is to be operated is safe for travel or any operation and if he is of the opinion that it is not safe to do so, report this to the Project Manager or the Engineer;
h. Lock the cabin and remove all keys before calling it a day; and

i. Operate the excavator in a safe manner and in accordance to safe excavator practices.
