A Project Officer position is available in the School of Biological Sciences, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

Singapore is the number 2 nation in terms of proportion of diabetics among developed countries. 440,000 Singaporeans had diabetes in 2014, with an estimated increase in number to 1 million in 2050. Patients with late-stage type 2 diabetes (T2D) often have a significantly lower number of insulin-producing pancreatic β-cells partly attributed to human islet amyloid polypeptide (hIAPP or amylin) aggregation. hIAPP forms toxic amyloids causing degeneration of pancreatic β-cells and a significant reduction in islet mass. At present, there is no cure for T2D and treatment options are centred on glucose management instead of protecting β-cell health. We propose to develop therapeutics which would protect β-cells from toxic amyloid of hIAPP. Host defence anti-microbial peptides (AMPs) could be potential molecules with anti-amyloidogenic activity. In this project, we design in vivo stable AMPs covalently-linked helical peptides utilizing hydrocarbon staple method and investigate hIAPP amyloid inhibition activity, mechanism(s) and survival of pancreatic β-cells. The outcome of the proposed research will validate hIAPP amyloid and AMPs as targets for the T2D therapeutics.

The Laboratory of Associate Professor Surajit Bhattacharyya at the School of Biological Sciences is vigorously engaged in cutting edge research of diverse nature. We are investigating

1) Molecular mechanisms of cell adhesion proteins, integrins and development of therapeutics against cancer, inflammation and blood related diseases.

2) Host defense antimicrobial peptides and proteins with aim to design new antimicrobials and antiendotoxic molecules.

3) De-novo designed functional synthetic proteins.

The laboratory is seeking to hire a motivated individual as Project Officer in a new research area to examine designed peptide inhibitors in amyloids of human IAPP. The objective of the work to develop therapeutics against type2 diabetes.

**Job Description**:
The incumbent will perform biochemical, biophysical and cell-based (in co-PI’s lab at IMCB) assays to determined anti-amyloid activities of designed peptides. A range of optical spectroscopic methods, structural methods and cell survival assays will be employed in the project.

Job Requirements:
- Minimum qualification required Bachelor’s degree either in Biological or Chemical Sciences- Prior research experience in the relevant field is a plus
