**Summary of Job**:
The CEO serves as the Chief Executive of the charity, and in partnership with the Board, is responsible for the success of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Together, the Board and CEO assure the Foundation’s relevance to the community, the accomplishment of the charitable mission and vision, and the accountability of the Foundation to its various constituents. The Board delegates full responsibility for management and day-to-day operations to the CEO, and he/she has the authority to carry out these responsibilities in accordance with the direction and policies established by the Board.

The CEO is expected to:
1. Handle detailed, complex concepts and problems

2. Balance multiple tasks simultaneously

3. Make quality and timely decisions regarding administrative issues

4. Plan and implement programs

5. Establish strong and appropriate relationships with Board, committees, volunteers, staff, donors and beneficiaries, and

6. Develop smooth and constructive relationships with colleagues, outside agencies, and individuals.

**Key Responsibility Areas**

**Legal Compliance**
- Assure the filing of all legal and regulatory documents, and monitors compliance with local laws and regulations, as well as those of Make-A-Wish International.

**Mission, Policy and Planning**
- Create annual operating plans that support strategic direction set by the board and correlate with annual operating budgets; submit annual plans to the board for approval.
- Oversee design, delivery and quality of programs and services.
- Stay abreast of current trends related to the organization’s products and services, and anticipates future trends likely to have an impact on its work.
- Collect and analyze evaluation information that measures the success of the organization’s program efforts; refines or changes programs in response to that information.
- Work together with the Board to determine Make-A-Wish’s local vision, as well as short and long-term goals.
- Help the Board monitor and evaluate the relevancy of the Foundation to the community, its effectiveness and results.
- Keep the Board fully informed of the condition of the Foundation, and all the important factors which impact it.
- Recommend policy positions, with clear understanding of issues, trends and problems in the non-profit sector.

**General Management and Administration**
- Promote a culture that reflects the organization’s values, encourage good performance, and reward

productivity.
- Provide general oversight of all Make-A-Wish activities, manage day-to-day operations, and ensure a

smoothly functioning, efficient organization.
- Hire, manage, and terminate the human resources of the organization according to authorized personnel policies and procedures that fully conform to current laws and regulations.
- Assure program service quality and organizational stability through development and implementation of standards and controls, systems and procedures, and regular evaluation.
- Assure a work environment that recruits, retains and supports quality staff and volunteers.
- Assure process for selecting, development, motivating, and evaluating staff and volunteers.
- Recommend staffing and financing to the Board of Directors. In accordance with Board direction, recruits personnel, negotiate professional contracts, and see that appropriate salary structures are developed and maintained.
- Specify accountabilities for management personnel (whether paid or volunteer) and evaluate performance regularly.

**Governance**
- Help the Board articulate its own role and accountabilities and that of its committees and individual

members, and helps evaluate performance regularly.
- Work with the Board President / Chair to enable the Board to fulfil its governance functions and

facilitates the optimum performance by the Board, its committees and individual Board members.
- With the Board President / Chair, focuses Board attention on long-range strategic issues.
- Manage the Board’s due diligence process to assure timely attention to core issues.
- Supervise the implementation of all Board policies.
- Participate as ex-officio member of Board committees, and provide competent staff support.
- Provide a monthly CEO update to the Board.
- Recommend volunteers to participate in the Board and its committees.
- Develop future leadership within the organization.

**Financing and Fund-raising**
- Prudently manage the organization's resources within budget guidelines according to current laws and

regulations.
- Oversee the fiscal activities of the organization including annual budget, reporting and audit.
- Work with Board to ensure the short and long-term financial viability of the organization. Develop and

monitor strategies for ensuring the above.
- Provide prompt, thorough, and accurate information to keep the board appropriately informed of the

organization’s financial position.
