Project Title: Screening and Biomechanical Risk Factors for Early Knee Osteoarthritis [RI 3/22 PT]

Project Introduction: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease. While it commonly affects the elderly, recreational athletes, especially those involved in sports with repetitive loads, are at a higher risk of knee OA at a relatively younger age. Repeated loads could lead to wear and tear of the knee cartilage, such as in the case of long-distance runners. With running becoming a popular physical activity in Singapore and worldwide, identifying the risk factors and mitigating knee OA risks are therefore important for these runners. However, there is currently a lack of data on biomechanical factors that may result in knee OA risks. This research aims to evaluate the biomechanical differences between low and high knee OA risk recreational long-distance runners. A novel screening method for runners with high knee OA risks will also be investigated.

**Requirements**:

- A Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Sports/Health science.
- Possess academic credentials and work experience preferably in the area of Health Sciences, Sports Science or Physical Education.
- Experience in research, preferably in the area of physical activity and health.
- Scientific writing ability (e.g. journal manuscripts, technical reports etc).
- Competent in performing literature search (both print and web-based).
- Knowledge and understanding of the community culture in Singapore.
- Well-versed with computer skills, web-based technology and other IT skills.
- Knowledge of elementary statistics and statistical software programmes (e.g. SPSS).
- Possess good communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Possess good organizational skills.
- A good team-player and takes initiative for meeting the roles and responsibilities. towards the project.
- Sincere and committed towards meeting timelines.
- Willing to participate in additional learning opportunities.
- Strong time management abilities.

**Responsibilities**:
As a member of the research team, the Research Assistant is expected to perform (but is not limited to) the following:

- Summarise the literature search and identify key findings of the previous research relevant to the objectives and approach of the present study.
- Set up and be familiarized with the study equipment, assist the Principal Investigator (PI) in the planning of study processes and developing of analysis codes required by the study
- Assist in the participant recruitment process
- Coordinate the study sessions and assist in data collection
- Gather preliminary and final data.
- Organise the collected data.
- Assist the PI in data analysis
- Summarise the key findings.
- Assist the PI with writing reports and manuscripts.
- Assist the PI with organising seminars, workshops and talks.
- Other duties as assigned by the PI
