Project Title: Growth in Bilingual and Biliteracy Development: Environmental, Individual and Experiential Factors (GiBBer) [OER 13/21 OBA]
Project Introduction: This study funded by the Education Research Funding Programme seeks to advance knowledge of child bilingualism, and bilingual/biliteracy development in a diverse multilingual society through the use of research methodologies from cognitive, developmental, educational and early childhood studies. The objectives of this part of the project will focus on individual differences that can account for observed variability in language development. Children in kindergarten to middle primary school from a larger longitudinal study will be identified to take part in this study to compare typical with atypical development. Individually administered assessment of cognitive skills, and language and literacy skills in English and mother tongue (Chinese, Malay or Tamil) are conducted. The findings from the project will inform bilingual policy, programmes and practices in Singapore and contribute to the research field of child bilingualism at the international level.
Successful applicants can expect to be involved in assistance with task development, coordination of selection procedures, data collection, processing, and analysis, and literature review.
**Requirements**:
Essential- Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant discipline is preferred (e.g., psychology, linguistics, bilingualism, child development, childhood education)- Good theoretical knowledge of research design, statistical analysis- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills- Experience working with children (kindergarten to primary school age)- Excellent organizational skills and reliably meet deadlines- Able to work independently with mínimal supervision- Able to work cooperatively in teams- Good IT skills (Microsoft office, etc.)
Preferred- 1 or more years of relevant experience in research and education- Ability to present research findings through various platforms- Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative software programs (SPSS or R, and/or programming such as Python)- Proficiency in English plus either Mandarin, Malay or Tamil
**Responsibilities**:
- Work closely with the project leaders and MOE colleagues to ensure reliable and on-time collection of data- Work collaboratively with research teams across projects, including for data collection and processing- Liaise with stakeholders (schools, families, agencies) to obtain and maintain participation and engagement in study- Conduct literature and database searches- Other administrative duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator (PI)
