About the opportunity

We are looking for a Staff Platform Engineer with a particular focus on Databases to join our Developer Platform team. Working closely with the Data Engineering team and with other Staff and Principal engineers in the domain, you will be responsible for collaborating on design, development and runtime of automation solutions for all kinds of data storage systems.

Note that this is not a traditional DBA role, our development teams are responsible for managing their database instances. Rather, this is a role which is responsible for creating solutions and automation to enable those development teams to deploy and run databases in a consistent and safe manner.

What you need to be successful
- Proven experience at managing large numbers of database instances in the cloud
- Knowledge and understanding of both SQL (eg PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL (eg AWS DynamoDB, MongoDB) databases, including the ability to advise customers on when to pick one or the other
- Knowledge and experience of data migration strategies, including the ability to make trade-offs between availability and speed, and including defensive coding to ensure safe rollbacks where necessary
- Good attention to detail and ensuring that we are creating resilient and high-quality solutions for our (internal) customers
- Good understanding of automation solutions (for example AWS ACK, Terraform or similar)
- Comfort with coding or scripting (we mainly use Go and/or Python) to create APIs to automate processes and procedures, allowing developers to deploy databases and other pieces of infrastructure in a controlled, managed and repeatable way
