1. JOB PURPOSE

Clinical Associates are temporarily registered doctors and are given more responsibilities and duties, in addition to the duties of a House Officer. Clinical Associate and all grades of Medical Officers, including MO (Trainees) and MO (Specialist) should perform the same level of duties (including calls) and responsibilities (same roster) unless they have completed Basic Postgraduate Specialist Training or have been individually assessed to be competent to perform duties and responsibilities at a higher level by the Head Of Department.

2. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

2.1. SPECIFIC (100%)

2.1.1. Responsible for the total management of patients in the ward with assistance of the Nursing Officer / Staff Nurse in charge. They shall make appropriate diagnoses and seek assistance from senior doctors when needed.

2.1.2. Help House Officers in the clerking of cases. Supervise them in the performance of procedures, helping them if necessary, especially with the more complex cases.

2.1.3. Review all new cases as soon as possible following admission and check on the House Officers findings and notes. These notes should then be countersigned by the Clinical Associate. However, they should record their findings, differential diagnosis and suggestions for management of the case separately.

2.1.4. Responsible for completing the Inpatient Discharge Summary Form and replying to referring doctors letters, informing them of diagnosis and progress etc within three days of the patient’s discharge. A copy of the reply must be kept within the case notes.

2.1.5. Write medical reports. Urgent reports should be prepared within a week and reports for non-urgent requests within 2 weeks.

2.1.6. Check on the House Officer’s case records for accuracy and completeness and should fill in diagnosis and disease index on the front sheet of the case records. In cases of difficulty, the Registrar or Associate Consultant should be consulted.

2.1.7. Responsible for assisting the Registrar and Senior Staff in the running of the Specialist Outpatient Clinics. They should review treatment of cases from time to time but they should not make any major changes to the treatment regime or discharge long term patients from follow up without prior approval of the Consultant or Associate Consultant in charge of the Clinic.

2.1.8. See patients’ relatives to brief them on the patient’s condition. They must also make sure that these are genuine relatives.
