A Senior Research Engineer is being sought for the research group. The Group is a world leader in designing and prototyping state-of-the-art precision optical and optomechanical systems and investigating novel concepts in optical imaging. The main tasks for this position include design and implementation of electronic control of custom optical systems developed and prototyped by the group. This includes PCB design, FPGAs and microcontroller programming, user interface development, and interfacing the components to user software such as Micro-Manager. The SRE will be also responsible for characterizing the performance of signal processing electronics and troubleshooting existing instrument control and automation systems. Knowledge of programming and scripting are essential for the position. Experience with instrument control and automation in laboratory or industrial settings is highly preferable. A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent) with a minimum of 10 years’ relevant experience is required.

Key Responsibilities:

- Development of hardware and software (Python, C++) solutions for microscope control and automation.
- Solve technical problems related to computer control of microscope hardware and imaging automation
- Contribute to assembling optomechanical systems
- Digital and/or analog electronic design of embedded systems.
- Component and/or system-level electronic design and testing.
- Printed circuit board development, assembly, and testing.
- Assist in analysis, review, and evaluation of design alternatives.
- Develop customized code for embedded microcontrollers and peripherals.
- Implement and troubleshoot these hardware and software solutions and ensuring their continual functionality
- Troubleshooting issues related to communication between microscope hardware and software in existing systems (including commercial systems).

Job Requirements:

- BS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent (CS/ECE) Degree (Master’s preferred).
- Min experience of 10 years is required.
- Good working knowledge with FPGAs, microcontrollers, microprocessors, and mixed-signal designs is essential
- Expert in programming languages such as C++, Python, VHDL, Verilog, Assembly.
- Experience in scientific experiment automation or industrial automation is strongly preferred
- Strong technical skills including high speed signal propagation, power delivery, protocols (I2C, CAN, SPI, etc.), USB, thermal analysis, ESD, EMI.
- Familiar with PCB layout design, best practices and debugging using standard EE lab equipment: SMD Soldering, DMM, Oscilloscope, Logic Analyzer, Spectrum Analyzer.
