China Reporter, Global Companies
Job Description:
The Wall Street Journal seeks a seasoned, enterprising reporter to cover global businesses in China.
China more than ever poses a paradox for companies headquartered in the U.S., Europe and elsewhere around the world. Its billions of consumers are crucial to the growth prospects for everything from automakers to hotels to retailers. Yet the business environment is growing increasingly political, and geopolitical tensions are intruding on myriad fronts. Companies risk being caught between the economics of their supply chains and the national security directives coming out of Washington, and between the activism of their customers and the demands of the Chinese state.
You will:
- Uncover and tell the stories of companies’ efforts to navigate these challenges, defining trends for a global audience of millions.
- Jump quickly and confidently on breaking news to tell the fullest story possible, while also digging for the important tales of pressure and compromise that often remain hidden.
- Be creative in the angles you consider, the sources of information you tap and the methods you use to tell the stories you find, all while adhering to the highest standards of accuracy and ethics.
You have:
- Curiosity and savvy about the intersection of business and politics, as well as the skill to source in a tricky environment.
- An ability to work well with others, as you will need to collaborate with other reporters in our Global China bureau, as well as in other bureaus around the world and inside the U.S.
- At least five years of business or financial reporting experience and proven success dominating a beat.
- Preferably, fluency in spoken and written Mandarin, though we will weigh the full range of your skills.
The position would be based in a major Asian city like Hong Kong or Singapore and reports to the China deputy bureau chief.
To apply, please submit your resume, a cover letter explaining how you would approach the role and half a dozen clips showing the range of your work, particularly regarding China if applicable.
