Team Structure:
The Firm's in-house legal function is headed by the General Counsel and comprises a Business Acceptance team and the Risk Management team; the Firm is looking to further develop its legal and regulatory risk function.
The Risk Management team provides support to the global Firm to ensure that it, along with its partners and employees, adhere to the legal and regulatory frameworks within which each office operates. This is a new role for the firm which will be focused on providing legal and regulatory support to the Firm's offices in Singapore, Hong Kong and China whilst working with the wider team (based in London) to provide support globally. The risk lawyer will report directly to the Head of Legal & Regulatory Risk.
Main Responsibilities:
This wide ranging and varied position will assist the Head of Legal and Regulatory Risk and, as necessary, the General Counsel, in relation to a diverse range of legal and regulatory risk management projects (focusing on issues arising from the Firm's Singapore, Hong Kong and China offices) and will be expected to provide advice to the Firm and/or its partners and employees on a range of legal and regulatory issues including:
- Compliance with local professional conduct rules and regulatory obligations in Singapore, Hong Kong and China
- Reviewing engagement and relationship letters, panel appointments and non-disclosure agreements produced by clients, and advising as to their acceptability; Monitoring and reviewing the wording of our standard form engagement letters.
- Advising on compliance with AML/CTF laws and regulations, anti-bribery and corruptions laws, economic sanctions and insider dealing laws.
- Data Protection compliance in Singapore, Hong Kong and China
- Creating, maintaining and updating the Firm's risk management policies and procedures;
- Developing and delivering risk training and general awareness raising amongst partners and employees;
- Assisting colleagues in Business Services teams with risk management issues, including reviewing supplier agreements and confidentiality agreements;
- Providing occasional conflicts and client due diligence support to the Business Acceptance team;
- Monitoring legal and regulatory developments in the risk and compliance sector in Singapore, Hong Kong and China and ensuring that fee earners are kept up to date with any significant and/or material changes; and
- Other risk management projects as required.
Attributes/Skills Required:
- A UK qualified solicitor or qualified in Singapore, Hong Kong or China, preferably with at least two year’s post-qualification
- Experience of working within a large or City law firm’s risk department and/or fee earning experience in corporate/commercial or data protection team.
- Working knowledge of relevant local legal and regulatory obligation including professional conduct rules in Singapore, Hong Kong and or China and Regulations and relevant Data would be
- Excellent interpersonal skills - the person will liaise with both lawyers and business services groups, in each case at all levels of seniority.
- Strong organisational, communication and project management skills.
- Good presentation skills.
- Strong analytical skills and ability to focus on detail but also on the larger picture.
- Ability to write clear, accurate and practical guidance and precedents.
