Project Title:
An Investigation of Food Safety in Singapore - Prevalence and combating of multidrug-resistant bacteria isolated from food sources sold in Singapore [RI 3/24 PL].

Project Introduction:
The investigation of food safety is an interdisciplinary area of emerging interest. Food safety and testing research is gaining importance in Singapore, given the increasing global concern about antibiotic resistance and the need to safeguard public health in the face of evolving food safety challenges. By addressing these issues proactively, we can contribute to global efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance and ensure the safety and security of our food supply. In this proposed study, we aim to isolate and identify bacterial foodborne pathogens from different food sources sold in Singapore as well as to screen and determine the antibiotic resistance and multidrug resistance among the bacterial species isolated. We will also evaluate different libraries of metal complexes for antimicrobial activity in the various foodborne bacteria isolated in order to analyze and establish the types of substituents in the metal complexes that are important in contributing to bacterial inhibition.

Requirements:

- Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Chemistry or Life Sciences
- At least one year of experience working in a microbiology, life sciences or chemistry lab
- Practical experience in bacterial isolation and identification, as well as screening for antibiotic and multidrug resistance
- Experience in synthesis and characterization of inorganic/organic compounds
- Proficiency in oral and written English communication skills
- Meticulous and systematic, and able to work both independently and collaboratively in a team
- Responsible, accountable, and able to manage tasks under tight timelines

Responsibilities:

- Isolation and identification of bacterial foodborne pathogens from different food sources sold in Singapore
- Screening and determination of antibiotic resistance and multidrug resistance among the bacterial species isolated.
- Evaluation of libraries of metal complexes for antimicrobial activity in the various foodborne bacteria isolated
- Analyze and establish the types of substituents in the metal complexes important in contributing to bacterial inhibition
- Order chemicals and other laboratory supplies weekly and keep a close watch on expiration dates to ensure quality control in the lab
- Ensure that the laboratory is in compliance to the safety regulations of the institution
- Any other duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator
