**About the Role**:
Reporting to the Head of Marketing & Maritime, this role is responsible for working closely with the Principal Legal to act as key Legal business partners for BHP’s Maritime & Supply Chain Excellence Function (Maritime).
The Specialist is accountable for providing legal support for all aspects of Maritime activities including the sale and purchase of ocean freight, freight forwarding and ancillary services disputes, incidents and supply chain issues. The scope of work includes bulk, break bulk and container-related work and the regulatory framework applicable to shipping, chartering and freight trading.
Working with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, key duties include but are not limited to:
- Liaison with Marketing Legal, Sales and Marketing, Supply and Asset teams on areas of intersection between their work and Maritime’s, including shipping-related provisions in Sales and Marketing contracts, management of force majeure events, internal company structures and contracts and shipping arrangements for inbound Supply.
- Assistance with claims under cargo insurance and charterers’ protection and indemnity cover.
- Identifying legal risks and emerging trends affecting Maritime and escalating it as necessary; participate in risk assessments and advise on risk management
- Contribution to regular reporting to various Maritime, Sales and Marketing and External Affairs stakeholders.
- Implementation of systems, standards, tools and processes such as ensuring cost effective and timely use of external legal services.
**About You**:
Self-motivated with a balanced and positive outlook, it is expected that the incumbent of this role can work well with ambiguity and is driven to make continuous improvement.
Formal requirements are:
- Minimum of 5+ years post qualification experience, focused on maritime law
- Law Degree
- Certified to practice in a major common law jurisdiction such as Australia, England or Singapore.
