Research Engineer/ Fellow

Overview As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. This position aims to advance the development of scalable, AI-enabled bioprocesses for the sustainable production of high-value specialty chemicals and functional biomaterials. The research fellow will contribute to SIT's Bioprocess Innovation Platform by integrating synthetic biology, advanced fermentation engineering, and computational modeling to enable lab-to-pilot scale translation and industrial impact. Key Responsibilities Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met. Undertake these responsibilities in the project: Design and engineer microbial strains using synthetic biology and enzyme engineering approaches (e.g., CRISPR/Cas9, AI-guided enzyme design) for the biosynthesis of high-value specialty chemicals and functional biomaterials. Develop and optimize fermentation processes at laboratory and pilot scale, including process parameter tuning, fed-batch strategies, and adaptive process control. Integrate AI and computational modeling (e.g., machine learning, reinforcement learning, CFD simulations) to guide strain optimization and process intensification. Establish and operate pilot-scale bioprocess workflows using SIT's Bioprocess Innovation Platform to validate process scalability and robustness. Conduct downstream processing and analytical characterization, ensuring product quality and process efficiency. Perform techno-economic analysis (TEA) and evaluate process feasibility for potential industrial application. Disseminate research findings through high-impact publications, presentations, and patent applications. Contribute to supervision and training of students and interns, supporting the research capacity building at SIT. Carry out Risk Assessment, and ensure compliance with Work, Safety and Health Regulations. Coordinate procurement and liaison with vendors/suppliers. Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment. Any other ad-hoc duties assigned. Job Requirements PhD in Bioprocess Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Synthetic Biology, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related discipline. Demonstrated research excellence with strong publication record in relevant areas. Strong background in microbial strain engineering, synthetic biology tools (e.g., CRISPR/Cas systems), and enzyme design. Proven experience in fermentation process development and scale-up (lab to pilot scale). Familiarity with downstream processing and analytical methods for biomolecules. Proficiency in computational modeling and data analysis (e.g., AI/ML methods, CFD, or process simulation). Knowledge of techno-economic assessment or process evaluation is an advantage. Minimum 2–3 years of hands-on research experience in relevant fields (including doctoral research). Experience working in interdisciplinary or industry-linked projects is preferred. Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-oriented environment. Strong written and oral communication skills. Ability to supervise students or junior researchers. Commitment to safe laboratory practices and compliance with biosafety regulations.
