Join to apply for the Senior Backend Engineer- Remote, Worldwide role at Nethermind We are looking for an experienced Senior Backend Engineer to design and build high‐performance systems that power institutional‐grade blockchain and DeFi applications. You are a builder at heart who thrives on solving complex distributed systems challenges and transforming ideas into scalable, reliable infrastructure. You have a deep understanding of software engineering principles and fluency in one or more modern programming languages (e.g. Go, Python, Rust, C#, or Java). You care deeply about writing clean, maintainable code, designing for performance and enterprise‐level security, and building systems that scale gracefully under real‐world conditions. This is a remote‐first role, working with a globally distributed team of engineers and researchers, and in close collaboration with leading financial institutions and blockchain ecosystem partners. Responsibilities Design, develop, and maintain backend systems and APIs that are efficient, secure, and scalable. Architect distributed systems that integrate blockchain data, financial logic, and external services with strong guarantees of reliability and correctness. Build high‐throughput data pipelines and services that interact with on‐chain infrastructure and blockchain protocols like DeFi. Continuously optimize systems for speed, scalability, and resilience, using data‐driven insights and monitoring tools. Collaborate with cross‐functional teams, blockchain engineers, researchers, and product leads to deliver institutional‐grade solutions. Qualifications 5+ years of software engineering experience, with a solid grasp of design patterns, testing strategies, and best practices. Strong programming skills in at least one of: Go, Python, Rust, C#, Java, or TypeScript/Node.js. Deep experience with databases, both relational (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and non‐relational (MongoDB, Redis), including schema design and performance tuning. Proven ability to design, scale, and maintain distributed systems from initial architecture through production operations. Solid understanding of API design, system observability, and performance optimization at scale. Working knowledge of containerization, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud environments (AWS, GCP, or Azure). Nice to have Background in large‐scale financial or blockchain systems and organizations with exposure to compliance, security, and data‐sensitivity requirements. Familiarity with on‐chain/off‐chain integrations, blockchain data indexing, or DeFi protocols. Experience with data pipelines, AI/ML‐driven systems, or event‐driven architectures. Contributions to open‐source projects, cloud‐native systems, or technical leadership in cross‐functional engineering teams. Understanding of cryptographic concepts or zero‐knowledge technologies.
