About AI & ML Platform Team

We build foundations to democratize AI and Machine Learning for Atlassian’s teams, customers, and ecosystem. Our tools enable development, deployment, measurement, and operation of AI & ML experiences and integrate with the Atlassian Data Platform while respecting security and data usage policies. The goal is a smooth, hassle-free experience for Atlassian users to harness AI and ML.

About This Role

As a Machine Learning System Engineer on the AI & ML Platform team, you will help develop and refine the core infrastructure that empowers Atlassian software engineers, ML engineers, and data scientists to create, train, evaluate, deploy, and manage ML models and pipelines.

You will collaborate with product teams such as Jira and Confluence to solve challenges in building ML solutions, which may involve curating ML datasets, fine-tuning open-sourced LLMs, or accessing proprietary LLMs. Your ML and software development expertise will help overcome infrastructure and architectural challenges. This role offers opportunities to lead projects from design to launch and to partner with various teams and stakeholders to achieve impact.

In This Role, You'll Get The Chance To

• Collaborate with teammates to solve complex problems from technical design to launch.
• Deliver cutting-edge solutions used by other Atlassian teams and products to build AI features reaching millions of customers.
• Deliver code reviews, documentation, and bug fixes within a strong engineering culture.
• Partner across engineering teams on company-wide initiatives spanning multiple projects.
• Mentor junior members of the team.

On Your First Day, We’ll Expect You To Have

• Extensive experience in building Machine Learning and AI infra/platform/system (generally 3+ years).
• Comprehensive ML lifecycle expertise: developing, deploying, and maintaining end-to-end ML systems, from data engineering to model serving and monitoring.
• Large-scale system design: designing and building scalable, fault-tolerant, high-performance distributed systems for ML.
• Proficiency with Python and ML frameworks like PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX. Familiarity with Go, Java, or Scala is beneficial.
• MLOps and automation: experience implementing MLOps, CI/CD pipelines, and automation for continuous training, deployment, and monitoring of ML models.

Nice-to-Have (Not Required)

• Cloud infrastructure: experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure and their AI/ML services and GPUs.
• Big data processing: experience with Spark, Ray, or Dask.
• Performance optimization: ability to diagnose and solve ML performance issues.
• Generative AI systems: experience with GenAI frameworks, LLMs, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG).
