Imperial College London and NTU are seeking (Senior) Research Fellows to join the IN-CYPHER programme on the cybersecurity of connected medical devices and systems. The research programme represents a UK–Singapore collaboration and will be based at Imperial Global Singapore (IGS). We are particularly looking for AI Research Fellows with the following backgrounds: Medical Imaging Medical time-series analysis Foundational Models Medical AI New learning paradigms and representation learning As an AI Research Fellow, the successful candidate will conduct fundamental research aligned with the programme and translate research outputs to achieve impact within the Singapore healthcare environment. IN-CYPHER comprises four interacting themes, spanning the design of intelligent medical devices through to the use of their data in informing personalised healthcare. The four themes of IN-CYPHER are: Theme 1 Protecting Implantable Devices Implantable and wearable medical devices – including sensors and active devices – operate under strong design constraints. Our research in this area seeks to embed secure design from first principles at the most fundamental levels (silicon or substrate) of device design; we also consider post-quantum cryptographically secure techniques in the immediate future. Theme 2 Securing Connected Wearables & Healthcare Systems Medical devices increasingly incorporate connectivity and are designed to be in use for long periods. There is a constant risk of zero-day exploitations; we seek solutions to detect breaches in intricate networks and data flow pipelines, embedding security at hardware level. Theme 3 Algorithms for Privacy, Security and Provenance To control active medical devices – such as closed-loop drug-delivery systems – data moves across different communications channels; data provenance and integrity are important. Data-driven algorithms may expose protected patient characteristics, posing challenges for operational use and product development cycles. Theme 4 Clinical Innovation & Translation Personalised medicine includes the use of data for closed-loop drug delivery (e.g., insulin delivery). With key researchers from Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, we seek to develop threat models for emerging personalised medicine and explore data-driven approaches to improve patient outcomes. Given the span of our research, we seek highly motivated researchers to join IN-CYPHER. We are developing intelligent technologies that span embedded systems and the protocols used to control and communicate sensitive patient information, up to interventional devices and systems for personalised healthcare. We seek candidates with drive and passion to be self-motivated innovators, to conduct fundamental research and translate findings into real-world applications. Candidates with strong publication profiles are welcome, but the ability to assimilate the complexities of healthcare technology and patient data and to work as part of a diverse team is critical. A willingness to contribute and lead on high-quality research outputs is essential. The collaborating Departments include senior academics from Imperial's Department of Metabolism, Digestion and Reproduction and the Department of Bioengineering (the largest Biomedical Engineering Department in the UK) and senior researchers from the School of Computer Science and Engineering, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine at NTU. Candidates will be employed by Imperial Global Singapore, a research division of Imperial College London, based in Singapore with opportunities for visits to Imperial's London locations. Informal enquiries are welcome. Please email Dr Viktor Schlegel at with your research interests and alignment to the programme.
