Responsibilities
The candidate will be responsible for conducting research on developing model-based simulation tools for enhancing user-centered design of assistive technologies for blind and low-vision individuals. The successful candidate will be part of an active research team led by Prof Kotaro HARA from the School of Computing and Information Systems.
Core Responsibilities
Design and conduct controlled user studies with blind and low-vision participants to collect movement trajectory data for hand guidance and robot-assisted navigation tasks.
Analyze collected data including 3D trajectories, audio cue logs, and usability metrics.
Develop and implement machine learning-based user models to predict user interaction patterns.
Create simulation tools that incorporate user models for rapid prototyping and evaluation.
Contribute to research publications in top-tier HCI venues (CHI, ASSETS, etc.).
Maintain and operate tracking equipment.
Collaborate with accessibility organizations for recruitment and community engagement.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, or related fields, with focus on Human-Computer Interaction.
At least 1 year of research experience in HCI or related areas.
Proficiency in Python, JavaScript, C++, and experience with machine learning frameworks like JAX.
Experience in conducting user studies, especially with visually impaired populations, is a plus.
Knowledge of 3D tracking, motion capture, and sensor data processing.
Strong understanding of machine learning and user modeling.
Skills in developing VR/AR prototypes (Meta Quest, Unity) and robotics systems.
Experience with accessibility tech and inclusive design principles.
Ability to analyze complex HCI problems and develop solutions.
Statistical analysis skills and experience with experimental design.
Research publications in relevant fields are advantageous.
Ability to work well in a small, agile research team and independently.
Excellent communication skills, especially with participants with disabilities.
