About the Role
The Sunrise Project's Global Research team produces high-quality, timely research to accelerate a global transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. The Senior Research Analyst - Corporate and Finance develops creative and nimble research solutions to empower strategists and partners. The role requires rigorous analytical and investigative work to develop insights into opportunities and risks.
We support networks of organisations to achieve outcomes beyond what individuals can do alone, and all roles help build capacity across networks and partner organizations.
About You
You are deeply curious, quick to learn new knowledge areas, and enjoy getting into the heart of research. You share knowledge, analysis, and insights, while learning from others. You view research as a strategic tool for organizational impact. You will support strategists and partners to ensure programs and strategies are ambitious and focused on accelerating the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
A typical day involves a mix of self-directed research; inputting and analyzing data relevant to campaigns; collaborating with campaign and communications strategists; meeting with partners to gather information; and providing insights to ensure alignment with the external environment. You will maintain high standards of reliable and meaningful outputs while balancing comprehensive analysis with time sensitivity.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct and lead on corporate and sectoral analysis:
Oversee, manage and undertake sectoral and company-specific research projects in industries such as LNG and Transportation, investigating topics like corporate ownership, governance, regulation, subsidies, and prospects. Support power mapping to identify key decision-makers, influencers, and stakeholder relationships.
Lead fossil fuel finance investigations:
Develop and implement investigations mapping and probing corporate and project financing (equity and debt) of key fossil fuel sectors, with initial emphasis on LNG and decarbonisation of transportation.
Track and interpret market trends:
Lead development and monitoring of trends in key markets for fossil fuels, with initial emphasis on LNG in the Asia-Pacific region. Map supply/demand, competition, and market influences to support strategy design.
Collaborate across teams:
Work with leadership and strategists to identify research questions that unlock new campaign pathways. Coordinate with other program teams to ensure alignment and avoid duplication.
Lead and / or Commission Research Projects:
In collaboration with other researchers, provide high-quality, timely research and analytical support. Define methods, manage collaborations and budgets, and assess deliverables.
Communicate Research Insights:
Translate research into accessible findings for Sunrise colleagues, movement partners, and diverse audiences through outputs and presentations.
Support Sunrise's values and OKRs:
Align programmatic strategies and OKRs with Sunrise's values.
Required skills, knowledge and experience
Understanding of corporate governance and finance, or related knowledge to assimilate market information rapidly (e.g., ability to analyze financial statements, corporate structures, debt/equity, subsidies, regulatory filings).
Strong numerical, analytical, and investigative skills, with experience using multi-source data and attention to detail. Proficiency in Excel and/or Google Sheets for data analysis.
Effective verbal, written, and visual communications, with the ability to explain complex information to non-technical audiences.
Adaptable and collaborative, able to work across areas to support team members and complete laborious tasks when needed.
Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to collaboration with subject-matter experts and movement partners.
Ability to rapidly analyze corporate announcements, policy changes, and market developments for campaign implications.
Deep passion for and commitment to social justice and related movements.
Desirable but not required
Proficiency in Mandarin or Japanese is highly desirable.
Proficiency with SQL, R, Python, or similar for data management and analysis is helpful but not required.
Experience with project finance analysis and understanding of Final Investment Decision (FID) processes.
Ability to contribute to institutional knowledge management.
Experience with financial research using platforms such as Bloomberg and financial disclosures; training available for willing candidates.
Ability to develop a network of experts across corporate, advocacy, etc.
Organizing or campaigning experience is a plus.
Job Requirements
Occasional out-of-hours meetings may be needed to work across time zones.
You must have full working rights for the country where you are working.

United States: USD 119,050 - $128,487
Australia: AUD 118,716 - $131,261
Japan: JPY 8,657, ,105,435
If the successful candidate is outside the listed locations, the salary will be adjusted based on blended global-local market equivalencies.
