Job Description
The Academic Support Specialist plays a vital role in identifying and assisting at-risk students through proactive intervention strategies, providing academic skills development, ensuring academic integrity, managing academic misconduct processes, and addressing general misconduct matters in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Early Identification and Intervention
- Continuously monitor students' academic performance, attendance, and engagement to detect signs of academic or personal difficulties.
- Implement structured processes to identify at-risk students and formulate personalized 'Success Pathways' plans aimed at enhancing academic progress.
- Utilise learning analytics tools and faculty referrals to accurately flag students requiring additional support.
- Proactively engage with flagged students to discuss academic progress, set goals, and address challenges effectively.
- Academic Skills Development
- Provide expert guidance through individual or group sessions focused on developing essential academic skills, including academic writing, communication, and examination preparation.
- Design and deliver workshops to educate students on academic integrity, policies, collaborative work expectations, and ethical research practices.
- Maintain comprehensive records of all academic support programs provided.
- Collaboration with Other Support Services
- Liaise with relevant support services, including counselling and financial aid, to provide holistic support to students.
- Academic Integrity Management
- Plan, develop, and deliver workshops on academic integrity for students, academic staff, and professional staff utilizing diverse and effective learning strategies.
- Provide comprehensive education on plagiarism, referencing, the appropriate use of AI tools, paraphrasing, time management, and proper academic conduct.
- Offer guidance to students who have breached academic integrity policies, providing clear explanations of violations and their implications.
- General Misconduct
- Provide expert advice to staff and students regarding general misconduct processes and expected standards of conduct.
- Audit and Compliance
- Participate in audit preparations and interviews conducted by local regulators or course providers.
- Ongoing Development
- Ensure that the policies and procedures relating to academic misconduct and general misconduct are communicated to all students and reviewed regularly for continual improvement.
- Review the student learning support and development process, including intervention measures, to ensure students achieve the desired learning outcomes and for continual improvement.
Key Competencies:
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally with students, staff, and external stakeholders.
- Proven ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with integrity.
- High proficiency in learning analytics tools and student management systems.
- Extensive experience in academic integrity processes and academic support services.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong organisational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant field.
- Proven experience in student support services, academic skills development, or academic integrity management.
