Job Description

As a creative Digital Graphics Designer, you will be working alongside journalists, developers, designers, and editors to create original digital content for our readers. Your passion for illustration, storytelling, journalism, and the craft of designing digital experiences will shine in this dynamic role.

Our team is looking for an innovative thinker who can bring visual magic to our stories. If you have a flair for creativity, a keen eye for detail, and excellent communication skills, we want to hear from you

Responsibilities include collaborating with journalists and data visualisation developers to understand requirements and translate them into visual designs that accurately represent the underlying data, editorial angle or product request. You will also assist in designing, illustrating and prototyping data visualisations, visual stories, social media assets using various tools and technologies.

Other key responsibilities include collaborating with the UX team to ensure that interactive graphics are user-friendly, responsive, and accessible across various devices. You will also help to document the design process, including any issues or challenges encountered during the design stages.

Staying up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies is crucial to continually improve and innovate our interactive content. This involves conducting investigative journalism/research with journalists using data, including conducting interviews and finding/verifying data sources. You will also use various statistics and data science tools for data parsing, scraping and wrangling.

Finally, you will manage workflow and process for data-driven stories in the newsroom and thoroughly test and troubleshoot interactive graphics to ensure functionality and performance standards are met.

Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Proficiency in Figma, Adobe CC (Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects), HTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • Experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS), spatial analysis tools, and data visualisation platforms
  • Excellent creative and artistic abilities
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality, accurate work
  • Familiarity with the news industry and an interest in current events
  • Experience in managing time effectively to meet deadlines in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
