Market Analysis Role Overview

Rio Tinto Commercial PTE. LTD., a global leader in the mining industry, is seeking an experienced Strategic Market Insights Professional to cover maternity leave from January 2025 to October 2025. This exciting opportunity offers a unique chance to contribute to the company's success by generating insightful analysis with a focus on lithium supply, demand, and pricing.

About the Role
The successful candidate will report to the Senior Manager - Minerals and be responsible for formulating market insights and forecasts for the Group. Key responsibilities include:
Demand
* Maintaining, developing, and validating global and regional demand models.
* Establishing relevant hierarchies for demand models to account for end-use industries and product preferences.
* Creating models where needed and maintaining or improving existing models. Working with the sales team and the broader commercial team to prioritize areas of focus.
* Contributing to longer-term demand discussion and trends, including battery chemistry and intensity of use analysis in various battery types.
* Contributing to value-in-use analysis for different products.
* Maintaining and developing tracking metrics to provide leading indicators for short-medium term demand over the 0 to 3-year time horizon, as well as longer-term demand. Tracking and communicating metrics that cover the key regions, end-use industries, and products (e.g. trade statistics and other sector-specific indicators).

Supply
* Monitoring competitors' stated strategies and objectives and comparing observed behaviors and approaches to the market, including product strategies, customer mix, and supply chain analysis - collaboration is required with a wider commercial team.
* Ownership of supply forecast files by competitor and product line.
* Maintaining and further developing competitive cost analysis in collaboration with process and geology specialists to assist with updating cost curve models and supply forecasts.
* Searching for information on competitors and updating if necessary.
* Developing a deep understanding of competitive supply chains.
* Consolidating regional intel to identify competitive customer portfolios.
* Monitoring and tracking trade flows.

Pricing
* Maintaining a view of current market pricing together with a forecast of short-term movements.
* Seeking to find leading indicators that can predict short-term price movements.
* Monitoring industry developments and providing analysis on how various events will impact forecast prices.

Requirements
To succeed in this role, you will have:
  • A university degree in either a technical or commercial discipline.
  • A minimum of 6 years of relevant experience within a commodity-focused MNC.
  • Managing, maintaining, and redesigning complex Excel models.
  • A strong industry network, as well as maintaining and expanding such, is essential for the success of this position.
  • Automated data visualization reports in Power BI.
  • Exposure to the trading environment will be an added advantage.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills (English) are essential.

Compensation and Benefits
The estimated salary for this role is $120,000 - $180,000 per annum, depending on experience. The package also includes comprehensive benefits, including health insurance, retirement savings plan, and paid time off.
