Job Description

A senior carpenter is responsible for overseeing complex carpentry projects, leading a team, and ensuring the quality and precision of all woodwork. This role requires advanced carpentry skills, leadership, and the ability to manage multiple tasks on a job site.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform intricate carpentry tasks such as framing, installing doors, windows, cabinets, and custom woodwork with high precision and quality.
  • Ensure accurate measurements, cuts, and installations by closely following architectural plans and blueprints.
  • Operate a range of carpentry tools and machinery safely and efficiently, adhering to safety protocols and best practices.
  • Lead and manage carpentry projects from start to finish, coordinating project activities with project managers, engineers, and other trades.
  • Supervise and guide a team of carpenters, apprentices, and laborers on-site, providing training and direction as needed.
  • Delegate tasks based on team members' skills and experience, ensuring efficient use of resources and minimizing waste.
  • Inspect work done by junior carpenters and apprentices to ensure it meets quality standards and specifications.
  • Address any issues or defects in carpentry work, ensuring timely corrections and maintaining high standards of craftsmanship and precision.
  • Estimate material requirements for projects and ensure timely ordering and delivery of materials.
  • Monitor the use of materials to avoid waste and ensure project cost-effectiveness.
  • Maintain an inventory of tools, materials, and equipment, ensuring everything is in good working order.
  • Ensure all carpentry work complies with relevant building codes, safety regulations, and industry standards.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, clients, and other trades, promoting a safe work environment and enforcing safety procedures.
  • Conduct regular safety meetings and maintain awareness of potential hazards and their correct handling.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve construction-related issues that arise during carpentry work.
  • Adapt plans or approaches when faced with unexpected challenges, ensuring the project stays on track and meets deadlines.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training or formal apprenticeship in carpentry is highly desirable.
  • At least 5-10 years of professional experience in carpentry, with significant hands-on experience in various types of woodwork.
  • Proven experience leading carpentry projects and managing a team, with strong leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Experience working with both residential and commercial construction projects, including proficiency in reading architectural drawings and blueprints.
  • Ability to perform complex carpentry tasks with high precision and quality, and to think critically and troubleshoot issues that arise during construction.
  • Proficient in the use of a wide range of carpentry tools and machinery, and strong knowledge of building codes and safety regulations.
  • Familiarity with different wood types, finishes, and carpentry materials, and ability to lift heavy materials, stand, bend, and kneel for extended periods.
  • Strong communication skills, with ability to communicate clearly with team members, clients, and other trades, and to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
