About this opportunityThis community-based conservation project is located on the north coast of the Caribbean province of Limn, near the Pacuare River Mouth.The beach is part of a 50km coastline stretching between Tortuguero National Park and the port of Limn, one of the biggest ports of Costa Rica.This project works together with the local community of Pacuare, promoting sustainable sea turtle projects in the wider Caribbean region.Volunteers will take part in nightly and daily beach patrols and operate a hatchery, protecting critically endangered animals.The project aims to increase alternative livelihoods for coastal communities, reducing the need for poaching and hunting turtles.The main threats to sea turtles are caused by humans: egg poaching and hunting nesting turtles contribute to population decline.On top of these dangers, sea turtles face global warming and contamination, resulting in nest and habitat loss due to beach erosion or entanglement in fishing gear and trash.Volunteers can gain hands-on experience in conservation efforts, including research, plastic contamination solutions, and community projects.This opportunity is ideal for those studying environmental science, marine biology, zoology, ecology, or conservation.
Key tasksCollect data about nesting dynamics, relocation of eggs to a hatchery, collect data on hatchlings, and release of hatchlings.Take part in beach patrols and operate a hatchery, protecting critically endangered animals.Gain hands-on experience in conservation efforts, including research, plastic contamination solutions, and community projects.

DurationMinimum 3 months commitment (or 7 days as a volunteer).
Cost$10 USD per day (negotiable).
Fee Includes:All food, accommodation, pre-departure + in-country support, orientation, and all project-related activities.
