About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team at Singapore American School as a Theater Rigging Specialist. As a key member of our theater crew, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of our performance spaces, including the Auditorium, Drama Theater, Theater Studio, and Elementary Theater.

Key Responsibilities
  • Staging and Rigging Equipment Management: Be responsible for the maintenance, upkeep, and repair of staging and rigging equipment across our performance spaces.
  • Counterweight Fly System Operation: Understand how to safely operate a counterweight fly system and ensure its proper use during performances.
  • Rigging Safety: Understand and adhere to safe rigging practices to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and performers.
  • Set and Prop Design: Design and lead the construction of sets and props for our productions, working closely with the theater team.
  • Team Leadership: Delegate tasks to other members of the team and to students as appropriate, when approved by the Theater Coordinator.
  • Scene Dock and Workshop Management: Be responsible for the management of the scene dock, workshop, backstage equipment, prop and costumes stores, and dressing rooms.
  • Work Safety and Health: Have a high understanding and respect of Work Safety and Health policies and ensure they are being followed at all times, reporting any concerns to the Theater Coordinator.
  • Production Meetings: Attend production meetings and contribute to them with your own ideas and suggestions for each show.
  • Training and Development: Present ideas for what training is necessary to advance skills in Stage Management and Rigging, or other viable avenues.
  • Performance Management: Be present for all performances and rehearsals to manage the stage, set, flys, etc., and educate the students of the roles and responsibilities of a Stage Manager and the backstage team.
  • Load In/Load Out and Build: Lead and supervise the load in/load out and build on stage, ensuring that it is constructed in a safe and structurally sound manner, reporting any concerns to the Theater Coordinator.
  • Custodian Staff Management: Book and lead the Custodian staff when needed on events/performances.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Be responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of all staging and rigging equipment in the workshop and across the performance spaces, working closely with the rest of the theater crew for support on big projects.
  • Troubleshooting and Repair: Troubleshoot, fault-find, and repair all departmental equipment.
  • Support to Other Crew Members: Support other members of the crew on their own projects.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Clearly communicate your projects and the support needed in regular production meetings, requesting casual support/external contractors as needed.
  • Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessments: Experience in writing Hazard Analysis, Risk Assessments, and SOPs and applying that to projects we produce.
  • Inventory Management: Participate in the procurement and maintenance of our inventories.
  • Handover and Leave Management: Handover responsibilities during leave to other members of the team to ensure a seamless transition during absence, accept temporary assignments when others are on leave.
  • Support and Guidance: Confident in asking for help when needed.
  • AV and Lighting Support: Support basic AV and lighting for presentations (simple and training will be provided).
  • Industry Practices: Model good industry practices to our students and colleagues.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Perform other duties or appropriate requests as assigned by the Theater Coordinator.

Essential Skills
  • Diploma in Technical Theater: Diploma in Technical Theater or equivalent is desirable.
  • Stage Management Experience: Experience working in a theater as a Stage Manager or similar.
  • Theatrical Standards and Expectations: Knowledge and understanding of Theatrical standards and expectations.
  • Set and Prop Building: Knowledge and experience in building sets and props.
  • Enthusiasm for Development: Enthusiasm towards developing your skill set yearly using the provided Personal Professional Development (PPD) fund.
  • Rigging Safety: Understanding of safe rigging practices.
  • Work Safety and Health: Have a high understanding and respect of Work Safety and Health policies and ensure they are being followed at all times, working with the theater team to resolve them.
Desirable Skills
  • Work at Height Qualification: Work at Height qualification is desirable.
  • Single Vertical Platform Lifter License: Single Vertical Platform Lifter License is desirable.
  • Entertainment Industry Experience: Experience working in the entertainment industry is desirable.
  • Rigging Qualifications: Experience in rigging safely and rigging qualifications.
  • Set Design and Building: Experience designing and building sets.
  • Enthusiasm for Development: Enthusiasm towards developing your skill set yearly using the provided PPD fund.

You must be prepared to work long and unsociable hours, including evenings and weekends.
