Sanctions Compliance Expert

We are seeking a Sanctions Compliance Expert to join our Global Legal Compliance team as a key advisor on sanctions-related issues outside China. The ideal candidate will have direct experience in sanctions and anti-money-laundering areas, strong client engagement skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, global environment with cross-functional teams across time zones.

About the Role
  • Ongoing enhancement and maintenance of global corporate sanctions compliance programs with a focus on US and EU/UK sanctions laws and regulations.
  • Advise and counsel stakeholders on sanctions-related issues and provide practical solutions in navigating complex geo-political environments.
  • Conduct periodic legal compliance risk assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of programs, identify gaps, and develop remediation plans.
  • Maintain competency in evolving sanctions law, regulatory trends, risks, and regimes impacting the business.
  • Provide guidance to improve and operationalize sanctions compliance screening mechanisms.
  • Advise on internal investigations related to compliance policies and partner with the internal investigations team as needed.
  • Conduct internal compliance training and education programs in collaboration with regional compliance counsel and cross-functional stakeholders.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
  • A law degree or Master of Law; up-to-date qualifications to practice law in a common law jurisdiction is required. A JD or LLM in US/UK is preferred.
  • Proven compliance experience in a reputable international law firm and in-house with a multinational company; technology and/or fintech sector experience preferred. Knowledge of sanctions regulatory and compliance programs; experience in US and UK/EU markets is a strong plus.
  • A deep understanding of sanctions and AML laws; ability to interpret and apply legal concepts to diverse matters; capable of taking a leadership role with autonomy and responsibility while weighing business and legal risk.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to understand client needs and adapt communication for diverse audiences.
  • Highest standard of ethics; positive attitude for learning and willingness to acquire new knowledge and skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership in setting strategic goals with a hands-on, 'roll up your sleeves' mentality; ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with flexibility, teamwork, and a willingness to adapt to client needs; timely delivery with sensitivity to urgency.
  • Proactive problem identification, issue resolution, and recommendations for process improvements.
