[What the role is]

The Centre for Climate Research Singapore (CCRS) is a division of the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS). At CCRS, our mission is to advance scientific understanding of tropical climate variability and change and its associated weather systems affecting Singapore and the wider Southeast Asia region, so that the knowledge and expertise can benefit decision makers and the community. Our vision is to be a world leading centre in tropical climate and weather research focussing on the Southeast Asia region.

The Seasonal and Subseasonal Prediction Branch (SSP) sits within CCRS's Department of Climate Research (DCR). The SSP branch focuses its research on climate processes relevant to Singapore and Southeast Asian region and on developing predictions for its stakeholders on subseasonal to seasonal timescales. The section also supports the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC) as well as leads the Long-Range Forecasting Node of the Southeast Asia Regional Climate Centre.

In a region that is heavily impacted by the ENSO cycle, Indian Ocean Dipole, and the Madden-Julian Oscillation, Southeast Asia has relatively high skill for both subseasonal (1 week - 1 month) and seasonal (1 month - 6 month) predictions. However, having high-quality predictions is only part of the equation, as these predictions also must benefit the users. Therefore, the SSP Branch works with national and regional users, as well as with other global centres, to develop valuable subseasonal and seasonal predictions and related products.

[What you will be working on]

  • To keep abreast with the latest international developments in the areas of subseasonal and seasonal prediction
  • To conduct studies on climate drivers that affect Singapore and Southeast Asia, including how they affect the subseasonal and seasonal predictions
  • To develop and evaluate new subseasonal and seasonal products for Singapore and the Southeast Asian region
  • Contribute to the operational duties of the SSP Branch
  • Communicate relevant research findings to relevant stakeholders through verbal briefings and reports
  • Working with local and international institutes to cultivate relevant research partnerships
  • Publish research outcomes in peer-reviewed publications and present findings at international meetings

[What we are looking for]

The job might be for you if you possess the following:

  • MSc or PhD (or equivalent research experience) in a relevant physical science such as meteorology, oceanography, mathematics or physics
  • 3-year research experience on aspects of climate variability, subseasonal predictions and/or seasonal predictions (desirable)
  • Experience interacting with users of climate services (desirable)
  • High level of proficiency in scientific computing
  • Background in data analytics and statistics
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, including publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Ability to work effectively to deadlines on individual projects and as part of a diverse team
  • Interest and passion to deliver relevant R&D for societal benefits
  • Ability to network effectively with the local and international research community
  • Ability to engage and communicate with scientists and stakeholders from diverse communities
