Key Job Purposes:

The School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) is seeking to hire a Research Fellow to carry out research on mechanics of collective behaviors of living cells under various environmental stimulations. In particular, he will look into the behaviors of contractile cells such as C2C12 skeletal muscle cells, and determine how extracellular environment will affect the morphology of multi-cellular constructs. He/she will collaborate with other Research Fellows, Research Associates, Project Officers, as well as students including Ph.D. and Master's students, undergraduate students, visiting scholars and researchers in the group. The RF will be responsible for designing experimental research on mechanics of plants and plant morphogenesis cause by mechanical stimuli including, but not limited to, plant leaf shape formation/morphing, biomimetic structures/devices based on shape morphing principles learned from plants. Furthermore, the PO will explore potential applications of the research findings in various fields including, but not limited to, soft robotics, morphing space structures, and sensors/actuators.

The RF may also involve in research proposal writing. The RF's role encompasses research leadership, mentorship, and collaboration within a multidisciplinary research environment to address major scientific challenges in plant mechanics and morphogenesis.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Research Leadership: Take research initiatives to explore new ideas and develop new methods. Drive the research strategies, methodologies, and experimental designs to advance knowledge in this domain.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with other Research Associates, Project Officers, and students including Ph.D. and Master's candidates, undergraduate students, visiting scholars and researchers. Foster collaborations within the research group and with other researchers outside the group.
  • Experimental and Modelling Research: Carry out both experimental and modelling research activities.
  • Key responsibility 4 Application Exploration: Explore the potential applications of the findings of plant mechanics in morphing structure design.
  • Key responsibility 5 Publication and Dissemination: Contribute to scholarly publications, research papers, and presentations at conferences. Disseminate research findings to the academic community and relevant industries.
  • Key responsibility 6 Strategic Collaboration: Collaborate with external partners, industry stakeholders, and other institutions to foster partnerships that enhance the impact of research outcomes and facilitate knowledge transfer.


Job Requirements:
  • PhD degree in relevant field (e.g., mechanical engineering, materials science)
  • Established publication and research expertise
  • In-depth understanding of cell mechanics and mechanobiology
  • Working at the interdisciplinary frontiers of mechanics, cell biology, and technology
  • Proficiency in research methodologies and academic communication
  • Rich experiences in cell mechanics research
  • Proven publication record
  • Basic mechanics research knowledge such as solid mechanics and material constitutive laws
  • Basic cell biology knowledge
  • Simulation research skills such as finite element method
  • Experimental, modelling and simulation tools
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English for research work
