- ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN HISTORY (DIGITAL HUMANITIES AND COMPUTATIONAL METHODS)

The Department of History at the National University of Singapore invites applications for a tenure-track position, beginning in August 2027, at the rank of Assistant Professor.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in History or a cognate field and will pursue a research and teaching agenda rooted in computational methods. We understand “digital humanities” broadly and are looking for applicants who have developed or adapted digital methods to answer historical questions in their field, for instance by recovering text from damaged or unreadable documents, mass-transcribing handwritten or non-Latin-script sources, using multimodal language models to generate structured data from archives, registers, or patent records, or applying deep learning to remote-sensing or LiDAR data to reconstruct settlement patterns. We are open to any period and region. Candidates should be able to implement such methods themselves and should be able to demonstrate this through published work, code, data, or models to which their own contribution is clear. The appointee will be expected to develop collaborative research projects, undergraduate and graduate teaching in computational and digital methods, and to have an international profile commensurate with career stage. Candidates working on any period of history and region are welcome, but strength in digital humanities is essential.

Successful hires are generally accorded, upon application, a start-up grant and thereafter have access to research grants from the Singapore government and other funding institutions. A competitive remuneration package, based on the qualifications and experience of the candidate, will be offered.

According to the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, the NUS Department of History is ranked 9th among university history departments worldwide, and 1st in Asia. It is one of 15 Departments, a Program, and a Language Centre within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Southeast Asia and East Asia are areas of specialization in the Department, which consists of more than 30 faculty members with research interests in various aspects of Asian, European, and American history, including military affairs, international relations, science and technology, migration and diaspora, religions, capitalism and business, the environment, and the maritime world.
