The School's primary clinical partner isthe National Healthcare Group, a leader in public healthcarerecognised for the quality of its medical expertise, facilities andteaching. The School is transitioning to an NTU medical schoolahead of the 2028 successful conclusion of the NTU-Imperialpartnership to set up a Joint Medical School. In August 2024, wewelcomed our first intake of the NTU MBBS programme, that has beenrecently enhanced to include themes like precision medicine andArtificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare, with an expanded scopein the medical humanities. Graduates from the five-yearundergraduate medical degree programme will have a strongunderstanding of the scientific basis of medicine, with an emphasison technology, data science and thehumanities.

Nanyang Technological University LeeKong Chian School of Medicine (NTU LKCMedicine) is seeking toappoint a full-time Research Fellow to work on the Health-DrivenDesign for Cities (HD4) study. Jointly led by Prof Nick Wareham atUniversity of Cambridge and Prof John Chambers at NTU LKCMedicine,HD4 is a large-scale population study aiming to develop theevidence base for interventions that impact the upstreamdeterminants of health in cities. It exploits a unique opportunityto work synergistically with the SG100K cohort study, augmenting itwith data characterising the individual environmental exposures ofthe cohort participants.

SG100K, spearheaded byProf. John Chambers, is a landmark population cohort study of100,000 Singaporeans of diverse ethnic background. The cohort hascompleted recruitment of >80,000 participants at the point ofthis posting. With comprehensive behavioral, phenotypic, andmulti-omic data, and electronic health record linkage enrichedbaseline phenotyping and evaluation of prospective outcomes, thestudy represents a state-of-the art platform for researchers tounderstand the etiology and pathogenesis of diverse diseaseoutcomes in Asia, and to generate insights that have the potentialto improve health outcomes for Asian populationsglobally.

The appointee shall work under thedirection of the HD4 team, e.g., Professor John Chambers, AsstProfessor Marie Loh, etc. A highly experienced senior researchfellow will support coordination and integration of activitiesacross themes. The appointee will have a unique opportunity to workwith a leading interdisciplinary team of epidemiologists,clinicians, scientists, engineers and architects to investigate howindividuals move in space and time in Singapore, theircorresponding exposure to risk factors that intersect with urbanenvironments, and how this influences their behaviour and health.There may be opportunities of sponsored travel to University ofCambridge. This role will be based primarily in the Population andGlobal Health Department NTU LKCMedicine in Singapore.

The Research Fellow will play a key role insupporting both Professor Chambers' and the team, mainly in, butnot limited to, the followingroles:
  • Developing statistical analysisplans and implementing analysis.
  • Leading andcontributing to the writing of research protocols, ethicsapplications, and publications in peer-reviewedjournals.
  • Liaising with researchers fromcollaborating institutes.
  • Presenting atinternational conferences.
  • Critically reviewingthe work of other members of the research team and mentoring lessexperienced members as necessary.
  • Contributingto data pipeline and administration, which may include data clean,linkage, and qualitycontrol.
Candidates shouldhave:
  • PhD in a relevant area (e.g.epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health). Candidates whohave successfully defended their thesis or dissertation arewelcome, subject to evaluation on a case-by-casebasis.
  • Expertise in behavioural epidemiology(particularly in physical activity and/or diet) or environmentalepidemiology.
  • Experiences of analyzinglarge-scale population data.
  • Experiencesworking with electronic health records(desirable).
  • Understanding of clinicalinformatics approaches (e.g., machine learning, Bayesianstatistics) and spatial data processing and analysis skills wouldbe of advantage.
  • Expertise in Stata, R, orother analytic tools.
  • Strong communication(oral and written) and interpersonal skills, experience working ina large research group is desirable.
  • Fluent inspoken and written English.
  • Ability to workindependently and collaboratively, with a pro-active and motivatedmindset, attention todetail.
