Roles & Responsibilities

Overall Job Purpose

To lead and supervise a project piping team of engineers and designers. To independently define concepts and critical deliverables, plan, manage, control, approve, and deliver engineering deliverables required for the assigned project effectively and efficiently according to specified technical requirements, timelines, and budget, manage project resources and independently deal with and resolve all issues of the project, and provide guidance to the assigned team.

Shares the knowledge and experience with project piping team members and guides the engineers and designers in carrying out the assigned tasks correctly and efficiently.


Core Responsibilities

  • Understand the project schedule and manage the overall engineering schedule and workflow from FEED to detail, including engineering subcontractors and other disciplines.
  • If schedule delays are predicted, develop a recovery plan to meet the target schedule while facilitating the project and other disciplines.
  • Worked with the engineering subcontractors and/or shipyards to execute the quality control plan to achieve the project and the departmental quality goals.
  • Estimate the man-hours required for each piping engineering activity and manage the project piping activities to ensure the project piping works within the budget.
  • Guides / supervises and motivates the project piping team members and shares their knowledge and experience while working on the project.
  • Understands and gets fully conversant with the technical specifications and requirements of the assigned project, including the Industry Standard, Classification Society, and applicable Local Statutory or Regulatory requirements.
  • Reviews project specifications such as for piping design, pipe stress analysis and supports, and piping fabrication prepared using MODEC corporate specifications and modified suitably to meet the project-specific requirements.
  • Finalizes the Equipment Layout addressing the process requirements and the requirements from various disciplines, material handling, constructability and installations, operations and maintenance, and safety, including skid package interfaces and tie-ins.
  • Participates in technical meetings, progress reviews, and 3D Model reviews to address piping layout issues, interface/implementation/execution issues, and escalates where necessary to maintain timely and smooth progress on the project.
  • Provides inputs for Conversion and Repair Specification, reviews rip-out plans, machinery arrangement layout, and piping arrangement guidance drawings for hull marine contractor to perform the work accordingly.
  • Reviews the BOM for piping bulks, valves, piping specialty items, gaskets, stud bolts and nuts, and pipe supports. Review piping weights and provide inputs for weight control reports.
  • Reviews the stress analysis reports and supporting of critical lines prepared by the Engineering Contractor (or, where necessary, carries out the piping stress analysis) concerning the project-specific requirements and environmental conditions at the fabrication yard, during transportation, and at the operating location of the facility.
  • Reviews Requisitions and Technical Bid Evaluation Reports for Pipe Support and/or Material Handling Equipment prepared by engineers so that procurement can proceed to order based on the technical recommendations.
  • Verifies that the selected piping supports are as per flexibility analysis findings regarding support type, loads, and special requirements, as applicable. Reviews spring supports data sheets and details set based on the stress analysis report.
  • Coordinates with the Construction/Commissioning team, provides technical / engineering support and advice, and resolves construction queries on piping layout, Pipe Support and Stress Analysis, and HFE/Material Handling.
  • Identifies and records the significant lessons in the course of project execution for future technical deliverables through MOPS/OFS Lessons Learned Process.
  • Leads and manages the piping engineers and designers on the assigned project.
  • Does not directly evaluate and decide on the commercial aspects. However, all technical decisions provided are intended to minimize costs while meeting the project requirements.
  • Plans assigned piping tasks and keep Section Lead and Group Leads informed of staff requirements, adequacy, or redundancy of resources on assigned projects.
  • Mentor/Train junior peers and motivate and guide them for career development.


Relevant Experience:

  • A minimum 20 years of relevant working experience in piping engineering in the oil and gas sector, preferably in FPSO or Offshore processing facilities, with a minimum of 8 years in the plant engineering and/or shipbuilding industry as a LEAD Engineer role with significant experience leading project piping teams.
  • Language(s) and Software:
  • List any special language requirement besides English and any fundamental software skill(s) required by this job.
  • MS Office, AutoCAD, Navisworks, CAESAR-II, Material Management System (SPMAT, AVEVA ERM)
