Guardianship Liaison Counsellor

XCL World Academy is seeking to appoint a Guardianship Liaison Counsellor. This is a full-time position starting from 1 August 2025.
The Guardianship Liaison Counsellor works with students individually, in small groups, and within the classroom setting to support and assist them in their academic, social, emotional, and personal development.
Identifying students’ academic and social/emotional needs, as well as providing any necessary interventions, is essential in removing barriers to learning and helping students develop skills and behaviours critical for academic achievement.
The Guardianship Liaison Counsellor is assigned to support and work closely with those student pass (Spass) holders living in the care of an appointed guardian and to liaise with guardians and parents on matters relating to the wellbeing of students. The support of students is achieved by both student-focused approaches (such as monthly check ins and interventions) and by engaging with key stakeholders to facilitate a multidisciplinary approach to ensure support and growth at a holistic level for each S Pass holder.
The Guardianship Liaison Counsellor works with the Admissions to understand, advise and support the admission of students to the school.
Main Responsibilities
- Assist with student transitions (into the school and when leaving).
- Monthly check in to provide welfare and wellbeing support.
- Providing the S Pass students with a voice at school and a trusted person to speak with.
- Monitors attendance (using provided monthly reports) and provides interventions or escalations.
- Initiate and respond to wellbeing referrals where appropriate.
- Provide regular formal updates to the Principals (with regards to student wellbeing and academic progress).
- Maintain an accurate database of students holding a S Pass and contact details of guardians and parents.
- Maintain an open line of communication with the appointed guardians.
- Adhere to relevant policies and procedures (Safeguarding and Child Protection, Code of Conduct, Guidance for Safer Working Practices) always.
- Work with the Admissions Team to monitor student accommodation and report concerns.
- Advocate, provide counselling and individual student support, recommendations and advice to students, teachers and parents/guardians concerning educational, behavioural, mental health and family issues.
- Work as part of a multidisciplinary team, including members of the Admissions team, and facilitate effective working relationships and partnerships with parents/guardians, school personnel and external support agencies to provide a comprehensive support, case management and referral service that optimises students’ access and engagement in educational programs.
- Provide a counselling and referral service to assist students in decision making about critical educational, personal, social, and emotional development, and provide ongoing support during the implementation phase of their decision.
- Models appropriate dress, demeanour, and actively contributes positive work ethics as defined by school Standards.
- Models and encourages a culture of kindness in support of the XCL World Academy core values.
- Assist schools in the implementation of student protection, gifted and talented education, behaviour support policies and risk management processes that may involve the development of individualised student plans.
- Balance the ethical issues of privacy and confidentiality for each student with the appropriateness of sharing information with others and maintain a comprehensive and professional record keeping system that complies with policy and legal requirements of parental and legal access to official records.
- Participate in relevant professional development and prepare and implement professional and personal skill development programs and in-service activities for administrators, teachers and parents/guardians.
Person Specifications
- Undergraduate degree from a recognised university or college.
- Master’s degree in education with a specialisation in the field of guidance and counselling, and/or similar qualification (Social Work).
- Minimum 2 years Counsellor and/or Social Work experience in an international school setting.
- Demonstrated track record of being a successful Counsellor or similar role.
- Fluent in both English and Mandarin.
- Has experience working with students who are living under a guardianship arrangement (Student Pass Holder) in Singapore.
- Understands and adapts to the diverse cultural backgrounds of staff, students, and parents/guardians.
- Counselling and social work background and experience.
- Demonstrated understanding of the needs of third culture/international students and students in transition.
- Goes beyond expectations in supporting student ambitions and goals.
- Is available for students, parents/guardians and is an advocate for students.
- Organised, proactive and solution focused and has demonstrated the ability to work well in teams. Has demonstrated a positive relationship with all members of the school community.
