Roles & Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Database Architecture & Design:
    • Provide expert consultation and design solutions for large-scale database systems (SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, etc.).
    • Perform database schema reviews and optimisations to ensure efficient data storage and access patterns.
    • Work with clients to define business requirements and translate them into effective database architecture solutions.
  • Performance Tuning & Optimisation:
    • Analyse, troubleshoot, and resolve performance bottlenecks across SQL Server, Oracle, and MySQL environments.
    • Optimise queries, indexes, stored procedures, and database configurations to ensure high performance and scalability.
    • Utilise tools such as Quest Foglight, SQL Profiler, and native performance tuning techniques to monitor and improve database performance.
  • Database Migration & Upgrades:
    • Lead and manage SQL Server migrations, including version upgrades (SQL 2000 and beyond), cloud migrations (AWS), and platform transitions.
    • Provide guidance on database architecture migration strategies, such as moving in-house databases to AWS cloud infrastructure.
    • Configure and implement high-availability solutions, including Log Shipping, Database Mirroring, and Always-On Availability Groups (AG).
  • Cloud & Virtualisation Expertise:
    • Administer and optimise database environments hosted on AWS, with expertise in cloud database provisioning, security, and monitoring.
    • Configure and manage AWS-specific database features such as Amazon RDS and EC2 instances.
    • Support virtualisation of database environments within VMware environments.
  • Database Security & Backup/Recovery:
    • Implement robust database backup strategies and disaster recovery planning, including regular database restores and validation.
    • Configure and manage secure database access controls, auditing, and encryption policies to meet organisational and regulatory compliance.
  • Automation & Reporting:
    • Leverage PowerShell and other automation tools to streamline database monitoring, maintenance, and reporting tasks.
    • Develop and deploy custom reports using SSRS, Power BI, and Power Pivot to deliver business-critical insights.
    • Implement ETL processes and integrations using SSIS packages for seamless data extraction, transformation, and loading.
  • Mentorship & Team Leadership:
    • Mentor junior database administrators and technical teams, fostering knowledge sharing and skill development.
    • Lead cross-functional teams to implement database solutions for various business units and clients.
  • Technical Consultation & Support:
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for database-related consulting requests, including performance tuning, migrations, and installations.
    • Provide high-level technical assistance and act as an SME in all matters concerning SQL Server, Oracle, and MySQL database administration.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field (preferred).

Preferred Professional Certifications:

  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate or similar certifications (highly preferred).
  • AWS Certified Database – Specialty certifications or similar certifications (highly preferred).
  • Microsoft database certifications (MCTS for SQL Server or other related certification)
  • Oracle database certifications (OCP or other related certification)

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Experience: 15+ years of hands-on experience in database administration, development, and support for large and complex environments (SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL).
  • Database Expertise:
    • Extensive experience in SQL Server administration (from SQL 2000 to current versions).
    • Expertise in database performance tuning, backup/recovery, high availability solutions (Log Shipping, Database Mirroring, AG setup).
    • Experience in cloud migrations, particularly AWS, and cloud-native database solutions like Amazon RDS.
    • Solid experience with Oracle database support and Oracle Apps E-Business Suite.
    • Proficiency in MySQL performance tuning and administration.
  • SQL Development Skills: Advanced knowledge of T-SQL, including the development of stored procedures, triggers, and functions.
  • ETL & Reporting: Strong experience with SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), Power BI, and Power Pivot.
  • Cloud & Virtualisation Expertise: Proven experience with AWS cloud platforms, including database provisioning and management, and experience with VMware server environments.
  • Automation Skills: Proficiency in PowerShell scripting for automating monitoring, maintenance, and administrative tasks.

Skills:

  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills for resolving complex database issues.
  • Ability to design, implement, and optimise complex database solutions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for technical documentation, client interactions, and team coordination.
  • Experience with database security, compliance, and disaster recovery planning.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience mentoring junior staff and leading technical projects.

Preferred Skills:

  • Knowledge of other database systems like PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or NoSQL.
  • Experience in multi-cloud environments or hybrid cloud infrastructure.
  • Experience with database monitoring tools (e.g., Quest Foglight, SQL Profiler).
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies and project management tools.
