Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine is recruiting colleagues who are interested in mentoring the future generation of medical doctors in their chosen profession and in navigating university life. A House Tutor’s role in academic and welfare support is a major factor in students’ understanding of higher education, the curriculum, the demands of the medical profession and the satisfaction of achieving their academic, personal and professional goals.


Senior/House Tutors form part of the faculty-led LKCMedicine House Support System. Reporting to the Lead of Student Wellbeing, you will be working within a team of Tutors to provide guidance and support to students related to their academic progress and welfare issues, with the aim of giving students maximum opportunity to succeed in the MBBS programme.


Responsibilities

  • Provide continuity in the support and guidance provided to students across the years of study in the MBBS programme. Tutors will be required to fully apprise themselves of the curriculum and processes of LKCMedicine.
  • Provide role modelling, mentoring and support to students while maintaining established and appropriate boundaries. The role does not involve academic tutoring.
  • Be an advocate for students when necessary.
  • Raise timely alerts and refer appropriately where the Tutor picks up any areas for concern or problems within the student group or with individual students.
  • Work closely with the other Tutors in the same House, to create a community and ensure the objectives of the House System are met.
  • Attend the regularly scheduled House (about 5 per year) and Year level (about 5 per academic year of study) meetings.
  • Be available for additional individual meetings with students, as needed.
  • Attend the regularly scheduled Tutor training and networking meetings – about 5 meetings per academic year.
  • Keep records of all meetings with students, especially the individual meetings, and forward these to Student Life and Services team, for filing in the student’s individual confidential file.
  • Tutors may be required to travel to meet with Tutees at the allocated meeting venues.
  • The expected time commitment is estimated at around 80 hours per year.
  • The role is remunerated for up to 80 hours per year (House Tutor) and 120 hours per year (Senior House Tutor) of an otherwise fully employed candidate.

Requirements:

  • We invite candidates with Medical (e.g. Family-Medicine Physician, General Practitioner, or hospital-based Clinician), Nursing (e.g. APN or nurse educator), Science (e.g. researcher) backgrounds, or Education (e.g. Medical educator).
  • An ability to work effectively with undergraduate students, peers, faculty and Deans.
  • A student-centric personal approach to tutoring and student support and an appreciation of the challenges students will face during their studies.
  • An interest in mentoring and guiding students in their chosen profession and in navigating university life.
  • Ability to readily provide empathic, compassionate and honest advice and guidance to students.
  • Good communication skills and an appreciation for constructive teamwork.
