We are looking for a Ventures Investment Manager to play a critical role in managing our VC fund.

This is a great opportunity for a proactive and collaborative individual to lead venture capital investments and support the growth of portfolio companies.

Reporting to the Head of Growth & Ventures and working in a collaborative and exciting environment, you will:

  • Challenge the status quo, think of new opportunities and work with a “founder first” approach
  • Pro-actively create investment hypotheses, scout and evaluate relevant opportunities from a variety of sources aligned to our strategy and focus areas
  • Lead the investment process for a variety of investments, bringing in external advisors and internal experts from areas specific to the opportunity
  • Lead negotiations on deal terms, manage financial modelling and write excellent (and brief) investment memos
  • Liaise very closely with the G&V Growth team to identify scale-up opportunities from our VC portfolio or from new potential investments
  • Identify partnerships opportunities with our start-ups and parts of Rio Tinto, and work together our Growth team to accelerate the partnerships and associated business cases
  • Act as an active shareholder to support and challenge our portfolio companies in a variety of ways, including attending board meetings and maintaining regular dialogue with their management
  • Support managing the overall VC portfolio, including active management of exposure across maturity, theme, risk, cash flow and other considerations to optimise its risk adjusted return
  • Manage and mentor junior team members, foster an inclusive culture, support risk-taking, communicate complex ideas effectively, and raise awareness of the VC fund and its value proposition within the start-up community and within the Rio Tinto Group

What you’ll bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Degree in a technical discipline
  • Strong strategic thinking, analytical, and problem-solving abilities
  • Outstanding communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills
  • A minimum of 10 years of professional experience, with a proven track record in venture capital either from a corporate or fund
  • Strong understanding of valuing start-ups and venture capital investments, ideally in the context of heavy industry innovation
  • Excellent leadership and management skills focused on leading by example
