Roles & Responsibilities

Job Description:

  • Draft physical coal trading contracts, accurately reflecting the agreed commercial terms and related counterparty agreements with internal and external counterparties.
  • Ensure the contracts are prepared in an appropriate format and comply with Sumitomo Group's internal guidelines.
  • Review physical coal trading contracts provided by counterparties to verify that the agreed commercial terms are properly reflected and that they comply with Sumitomo Group's internal guidelines and relevant counterparty agreements.
  • Closely coordinate with all internal stakeholders to manage the contract workflow, ensuring a smooth and accurate process from deal execution to final signing while adhering to Sumitomo Group's internal guidelines.
  • Leverage extensive knowledge of contract terms, shipping conditions, and formats related to bulk commodity physical trading, along with a fundamental understanding of accounting, finance, and legal matters, to review amendments proposed by counterparties and assess modifications to contracts and confirmations. When necessary, independently negotiate adjustments to the terms.
  • Collaborate closely with SER, Sumitomo Group's Legal Department, and the Risk Management Team as needed to address legal or compliance issues arising during the contract review and negotiation process.
  • Conduct research on counterparties' financial conditions, considering industry characteristics and company-specific factors, and submit internal applications in accordance with SER/Sumitomo Group's internal guidelines.
  • Responsibilities also include discussions and explanations to the Japan headquarters, as well as gathering and incorporating relevant information through external consultants. When necessary, request parent company guarantees from counterparties or obtain and provide parent company guarantees from the headquarters.
  • If a review of credit terms is deemed necessary for counterparties with high guarantee risks, provide recommendations to the Trade Team.
  • As a coal trade representative in the sales department, submit the annual internal application for derivative transactions in accordance with company rules, leveraging practical experience and background knowledge in coal trading. This includes engaging in discussions and providing explanations to the Japan headquarters.
  • When preparing the application, closely coordinate with the manager to establish the trading strategy, expected revenue, and potential risks.
  • Collaborate with the Manager, Japan headquarters, and overseas offices to facilitate smooth negotiations and agreements for sales to Japanese clients and procurement from overseas suppliers.
  • After contract execution, closely coordinate with the middle and back offices to ensure seamless follow-up on post-trade processes.
  • Proactively propose enhancements to overall processes and management methods, taking the initiative to drive improvements while engaging relevant stakeholders.
  • Utilize expertise in the coal industry and market risk to analyze Coal Desk trading data, including position exposure and P&L.
  • Provide accurate and timely daily reports to relevant internal stakeholders, primarily the Japan headquarters. Based on the analysis, offer recommendations on strategy, contract terms, and risk management approaches.
  • Work closely with Traders to understand their future strategies and appropriately reflect them in reports.
  • Compile and analyze customs statistics and company data, delivering reports that incorporate unique insights to support Traders in making better-informed decisions.
  • Ad-hoc analysis for our trading business as required by manager / executives
  • Regularly meet with industry stakeholders, including suppliers, end-users, traders, and analysts, as well as other internal departments, to gather and analyze information on market conditions and industry trends.
  • Provide internal stakeholders with reports based on the collected insights.
  • Additionally, offer strategic and tactical recommendations that contribute to the growth of the global team.

Job Requirements:

  • Possess extensive knowledge of contract terms, shipping conditions, and formats related to bulk physical trading, along with 3–5 years of practical experience in contract negotiation, contract drafting, vessel coordination, payment settlement, credit management, and claims handling.
  • Have a fundamental understanding of commodity trading, derivatives, and relevant regulations, with experience in mark-to-market valuation and management of both physical and futures coal.
  • Possess basic knowledge of accounting, finance, and legal matters.
  • Have at least one year of experience in transactions with Japanese steel and power companies, as well as suppliers from Australia and Indonesia.
  • Possess fundamental knowledge of credit management and risk management, with at least one year of practical experience in credit applications at a Japanese company and handling parent company guarantees.
  • Have a deep understanding of the power and steel industries, particularly Japanese power utilities and steel mills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively within a global team, ensuring accurate information sharing and building trust through collaboration with multiple internal stakeholders. Experience working as part of a global team of 10 or more members is required.
  • Proficiency in business-level English is required, and business-level Japanese is preferred.
