Roles & Responsibilities

SIT offers multi-disciplinary engineering degree programmes that are closely aligned with Singapore's key economic growth sectors. These include aerospace, civil, electrical power, marine, mechanical, land transport, robotics, and systems engineering. Many of these programmes are first of their kind in Singapore, specialised degree programmes with a strong emphasis on skills mastery through close collaboration with industry partners.

The Engineering Cluster has mapped its cluster research capability and geared research efforts in the areas of energy, infrastructure, and sustainability. These are key areas that are of utmost importance to the development and future of Singapore and the region.

The SIT Engineering Cluster is made up of a diverse mix of subject-area experts who have deep industry experience and specialised domain knowledge. Applied research is at the forefront of SIT's academic pursuits to not only bring benefits to the industry but also enables faculty members to bring real-world problems into their teaching. Most of Engineering's faculty members are active in industry-facing applied research and innovation activities, producing solutions that make our research impact felt through industry and community transformation.

The maritime and marine & offshore industries in Singapore are thriving, bolstered by strategic initiatives and robust infrastructure.

1. Martime Industry :

  • Singapore is a global maritime hub, handling around 130,000 vessels annually.
  • In 2020, it retained its position as the world's second-busiest container port and the top bunkering port.
  • The industry contributes 7% of Singapore's GDP and employs over 170,000 people.
  • Technological advancements, such as automation and digitalisation, enhance port efficiency.

2. Marine & Offshore Engineering:

  • Singapore services worldwide demand for ship repair, rig-building, and offshore engineering.
  • It excels in oilfield equipment manufacturing and offshore supply vessel chartering.

3. Resilience Amid Challenges:

  • Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Singapore's sea transport sector remained resilient.
  • Singapore's port handled a record 39.01 million shipping containers, or twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), in 2 0 2 3, eclipsing its previous record of 37.57 million TEUs in 2021.
  • The industry continues to adapt, innovate, and contribute significantly to Singapore's growth.

SIT is well-positioned to educate and train talent and equip them with industry-relevant skillsets. We offer complementary undergraduate programmes in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering; Electrical Power Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Mechatronics Systems and Robotics Systems that draw upon the expertise from Singapore and from our overseas university partners (Newcastle University, University of Glasgow, and DigiPen Institute of Technology).
