We are looking to appoint a full-time Research Associate(History) at the School of Humanities in Nanyang TechnologicalUniversity (NTU).

The incumbent will be part ofone of a collaborative team of researchers based in NTU's HistoryDepartment working on the history of environmental crises andepidemics in colonial Hong Kong led by Assistant Professor FlorenceMok. The Research Associate will focus on examining howtransnational networks which linked Hong Kong and other places,especially Southeast Asia, affected the development of the ColdWar, which in turn influenced state's response to different kindsof crises, political and natural.

Thefellowship position is a fixed term post for 12 months, with apossibility of further extension.

Aboutthe Project

This study will make anoriginal contribution to the political, social and environmentalhistory of modern Asia, British colonialism and the Cold War byexploring how the colonial government and the Chinese society inHong Kong mitigated environmental crises from 1945 to 1980, withthe Cold War in the background. This is a period of historicalsignificance: it witnessed growing policy initiatives, increasedeconomic affluence and rising political and social consciousness.It will focus on how the state and popular responses to watershortages, in particular propaganda, were influenced by Cold Warpolitics. The proposed study will use a traditional historicalapproach of examining published sources and archival manuscripts inHong Kong and London.

KeyResponsibilities:
  • Examinethe data collected from the Hong Kong Public Records Offices andthe National Archives at Kew.
  • Carry outliterature survey on Hong Kong history and different theories, inparticular work Cold War networks between Hong Kong and SoutheastAsia, different forms of propaganda and approaches of crisismanagement.
  • Coordinate with the HistoryResearch Fellow, the History Associate and PI, apply theoreticalframeworks to the historical/archivalfindings.
  • Use both qualitative and quantitativemethods to analyse the effectiveness of the crisis managementmeasures implemented by the colonial government in HongKong.
  • Work with PI and turn the findings intojournal articles for submission.
  • Organiseseminars and conferences on the researchtopic.


JobRequirements:
  • MA/MPhil inHistory, specializing in post-war Hong Kong studies/the Cold War/connections between Hong Kong and SoutheastAsia.
  • Knowledge in qualitative and quantitativemethods and ability to analyse archival records andstatistics.
  • Ability to read and interpretChinese sources, fluency in Cantonese would be advantageous asarchival data collected from the Hong Kong Public Records Offices,and Chinese newspapers and mass media that we sampled would containmaterials in Chinese /Cantonese.
  • Excellentinterpersonal skills, able to build productive relationships withinthe research team and beyond NTU.
  • Highlyself-motivated, capable of working independently as well as part ofa team.
