Roles & Responsibilities

As a Fitter, your job job description typically involves assembling, installing, and maintaining machinery and equipment, requiring skills in reading technical drawings, using hand and power tools, and ensuring proper fit and quality.

Key Responsibilities:

Assembling and Installing Machinery:

  • Following blueprints and specifications to assemble and install mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Ensuring that parts fit together correctly and meet quality standards.
  • Using hand and power tools to cut, shape, and fit materials.

Maintenance and Repair:

  • Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance on mechanical equipment to identify and address potential issues before they result in breakdowns.
  • Identifying and troubleshooting mechanical issues.
  • Repairing or replacing broken or worn-out parts.

Welding and Fabrication:

  • Welding and fabricating components as required.
  • Using welding equipment to fuse structural components.

Technical Skills:

  • Reading and interpreting technical drawings and schematics.
  • Understanding mechanical principles and systems.
  • Using specialized tools and equipment.
  • Basic troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical faults and malfunctions in equipment, and perform necessary repairs or replacements to restore functionality.

Collaboration and Safety:

  • Collaborating with other team members to complete projects on time
  • Following safety protocols and guidelines while working.
  • Ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Document all maintenance activities, including repairs, replacements, and inspections, in maintenance logs or computerised maintenance management systems.

Maintaining Equipment: Maintaining and checking the equipment they use every day.

Responding to Emergencies: Responding to emergency calls.

Requirements:

  • Minimum N level (or similar) and above
  • Completion of a formal apprenticeship or trade school program in mechanical fitting or a related field.
  • Proven experience as a Mechanical Fitter onboard vessels.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical principles, components, and systems, including pumps, conveyors, motors, gearboxes, and hydraulic/pneumatic systems.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Proficiency in using hand and power tools, measuring instruments, and welding equipment.
